You know, I’m always hesitant to go out to weekday gigs and I’m not sure why because Handsome Furs last night was amazing and I think part of that was because it was on a Tuesday – everyone had made the effort to come out on a rainy midweek night and it felt special and exciting – like you’d snuck out to a party on a school night.

The night began with opening act Brand New Math who we caught towards the end of their set. They held the attention of the 200+ crowd to the last and did a great job setting the scene for the electric performance to come.

Handsome Furs took the stage just before 11 and were super charged – their energy was amazing and they kept it up till the very end and even played an encore and asked where the house party was. They played with such obvious enjoyment of their music and each other and us the crowd that they won everyone over – the crowd was buzzing.

I couldn’t recommend seeing them enough, they are heaps better live than recorded, but in saying that, now I’ve seen them live, Iistening to them today is so much more enjoyable and I wish I’d bought one of their 12s!

Highlights: I’m Confused, Legal Tender, All We Want, Baby, Is Everything, the crowd, the venue and figuring out thanks to a friend who Dan Boeckner reminded me of sometimes – Bruce Springsteen!
