The smiths is darker, and more driving that solo Morrissey - he generally does How Soon is Now at live gigs, also the Smiths were kind of an interesting band because they were Jangly but they didn't sound all sloppy and boring like most jangle-pop acts you hear.
Morrissey would do well if he wrote a book - y'know, one thats really witty and 'Morrissey-esque' - I know Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen are both published writers...personally I don't get a lot of depth from Morrisseys music (people describe it as 'depressing' although I only find his tunes, well, slightly cold really) but it would be a good book.
That thing about Morrissey being a racist is kind of true - the tune 'Bengali in Platforms' was misunderstood as a statement about immigration and stuff, but if you look back to early 2008 he did an interview with NME where he sort of bashes foreigners, or at least says he doesn't want them in his country, ruining his sense of 'Englishness' etc - kind of a wierd comment to make.
Im not all that familiar with Morrisseys solo career, but id still love to see the guy that fronted the Smiths.
Hopefully heel pop out a tune or 2 from then
The other thing about Morrissey is his f**ked-up racist/nationalist sentiments that get into the press occasionally.
From what I've heard from fans live Morrissey gigs are a lot louder and more over-the-top than you might expect.
