Real Groovy faces receivership

Real Groovy faces receivership

Thursday, 16th October 2008 12:00PM

Real Groovy Records, NZs and definitely Auckland’s favourite record store has gone into receivership.

Managing director Chris Hart told NZPA the receivership was a result of problems he signalled in July, when he said a bad foreign exchange deal had left the 28-year-old business in need of capital.

Real Groovy specialised in second hand sales and only 28 percent was on new products. Although not mentioned as a cause, the declining CD trade would've most definitely played a part, and of course Australian chain JB Hi Fi in New Zealand along with the Warehouse placing price pressures.

they shouldn't have spent all their money shipping in all that crap 50s/60s/70s vinyl that they have had sitting around for the last year... they made such a fanfare when they shipped it all over from the US, running articles everywhere about how "vinyl is back" ... well, vinyl is back, but not what they've got....

I recall about 6 months ago an interviewee on a some community radio programme called 'Marketwatch' or something explained that over the next decade all music retail stores will go out of business - along with call centres and a handful of others he named.

At present, retail is down anyway and all the bad press about the 'economic crisis' etc probably has the effect of scaring shoppers away from impulse purchases and luxury items etc.

I remember R.G. Christchurch would often be completely empty on Sunday with moderate-to-slow business during the week really. They have extreme metal, lots of dub and R&B stuff and also fantastic books like the Vice Guide to Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. Which is one of the funniest (and most puerile and tasteless) books ever published.

Sounds has gone under as well if I remember - or the CD store or one of them...

Typical. Blame the change in 'global purchase patterns', bullshit. The owners over extended themselves, buying a failing south island chain of stores and a lack of re-investment in the company! Sheer greed! It was going so well until they got greedy. Think of the poor sods who work in these stores and the lives the owners have screwed up due to their avarice, shame! Lets hope that they can salvage something out of the company for the workers sake who have put so muh into the company over years.

thats a real shame. I remember when crawlspace on KRd closed down.

That was a sad day... although some good scores from their closing down sale.
