The Clean Receive 2017 Independent Music NZ Classic Record Award For 'Boodle Boodle Boodle'

Thursday 30th March, 2017 10:39AM

Flying Nun mainstays The Clean have been revealed as the recipients of this year's Independent Music NZ Classic Record award for their formative 1982 record Boodle Boodle Boodle. The award will be presented to the Dunedin noiseniks as part of the Taite Music Prize ceremony which is set to take place next month. Founding member David Kilgour said in a statement that it is a great pleasure to accept the award, especially as it's in the spirit of Dylan Taite, whom the awards are named after.

“Boodle was a really important recording for The Clean and all involved in many ways. I have nothing but joyous memories of making Boodle (give or take the odd seizure!) – I’m reminded almost weekly about the work we did in those short few years in the late 70’s / early 80s. It never ceases to amaze me how far the recordings have travelled. The work we did back then pretty much propelled me into a life in music.

"In some ways, everything I’ve done since this period has been in the shadow of this work really, but I’m lucky I got a shadow! Ha!”

The Boodle Boodle Boodle EP was recorded in September 1981 over three days in a hall on Bond Street in Auckland, overseen by Chris Knox and Doug Hood using Knox's TEAC 4-track tape machine and a budget of $750. Knox also drew the cover art, which was his interpretation of a photograph by Carol Tippet of The Clean sharing a bath.

The EP followed the band's top-20 debut single 'Tally Ho' into the charts, peaking at number five and staying in the Top 40 for 19 weeks.

Previous Independent Music NZ Classic Record Award recipients include Gordons, the AK79 compilation, Herbs and Upper Hutt Posse.
