Borderline Music Festival II This Weekend

Borderline Music Festival II This Weekend

Monday 6th April, 2009 12:00PM

The Borderline Music Festival is back again this Easter weekend, spreading itself between the Wine Cellar and Whammy Bar in St Kevin's Arcade and hosting a horde of amazing artists.

Described by it's organiser as "a truly independent festival brought to you without any corporate or government funding, Music made for the sake of making music", it's a great reason AK for your long weekend.

Get along for a night or four, here's the deal:

Friday 10th Good Friday

9:30pm Wine Cellar

Starting things off, Good old fashioned song writing with a dash of the blues, Skyscraper have been looming over fans (and customers) for the last couple of months, an EP is on its way.

Second up are The Claudlands Weasels, mysterious folks from Hamilton prepare to be taken on a ride through the back stacks of the scariest library you've ever seen....

10:30pm Whammy Bar

Mr Dean Roberts Esq will then lead us on journey crossing boundaries and exceeding expectations.

11pm Wine Cellar

The Hannah Curwood Rebekah Davies & Band will then bring there sweet collection of songs with amazing dynamic guitars, double bass & violin.

11:30pm Whammy

Mary Rose Crook & The Renderers the legendary south island dark alt country project of Brian and Mary Rose Crook with a new line up including Stefan Neville (Pumice) Sean O'Reilly (King Looser) Shaun Jury (Bloody Souls, Aesthetics).

Following this treat Wellington's Mr Sterile Assembly will break out their avant guard political art punk.

Saturday 11th

9:30 pm Wine Cellar

First up Lisa Crawley and the Conversations will once again bring there eclectic song craft to the wine cellar both joyful and tragic. Both Lisa and the conversations are an enjoyable collection of virtuoso performers who just want to entertain.

Next up is Canadian Bob Wiseman. Both musician and filmmaker, Bob has worked with Wilco, Barenaked Ladies and Ron Sexsmith to name but a few. This will be a multi media performance not to be missed...

10:30pm Whammy Bar

Kelly Ann following the Punches and extended tours as bass player for Dimmer. Kelly is about to depart NZ for the USA and this is one of your last chances to hear her songs live.

11:00pm Wine Cellar

Golden Axe
bring their magic to the Wine Cellar for the first time (in ages) expect a longer more improvisational set.

11:30 Whammy

While Golden Axe put the Wine Cellar pa through its paces Hamilton's Hollow Grinders will set the Whammy dance floor alight. The Best Surf Rock band in the southern hemisphere since 1996 never disappoint.

Next The Bemsha Swing, a band which played their first show at Borderline 08 (with a real drummer) will now bring there fast paced pop barrage back to the Borderline and the now familiar Whammy stage.

Sunday 12th April

9:00pm Wine Cellar

Mr Matthew Crawley Esq front guy from the Cosbies and the Conjurors reveling his more sensitive country infused soul.

Following this ¡recuerde! will bring the house down.... with doom laden drones of regret and remembrance.

10:00pm Whammy Bar

New kids on the block USSA played there first show opening for the bemsha swing the last weekend. Pop & punk rolled up in a twin guitar attack.

10:30pm Wine Cellar

Up from Wellington we have the delightful i.ryoko a sea of harmonized vocals and ambient guitar in a bed of field recordings.

11:00 Whammy Bar

Time for things to get energetic, The Freudoids will pick up where USSA have left off. While not giving up on their punk/hardcore roots the Freudoids are constantly evolving and exploring new territory, defiantly a band to keep an eye on.

To close out the night we have Aucklands one and only Malenky Robot always on the outside screaming in and showing us the complacency and bullshit of all those too concerned with image. The informed or simply observant will notice a slight similarity between all three bands on at whammy on this night it is the unofficial malenky incest fest.

Monday 13th April

9:00pm Wine Cellar

The Will Gresson Project will start things off, expect odd tunings and a delightful combination of composed and improvised music.

Following this Vitamin S HQ will put together a fine group of improvisors for our listening pleasure.

10:00pm Whammy Bar

Borderline is stocked to present F in Math, the solo project of Mike Logie (from Cosmic Rays Of Death and formerly from the Mint Chicks). Dark broken electronica with processed vocals & live instrumentation.

10:30 Wine Cellar

Wine Cellar regulars The Lipperzanas will break out there set of gloriously twisted latin infused jazz expect lights loud shirts and some impressive playing, vibes, drums, bass, sax/flute.

11:00pm Whammy Bar

The Drab Doo Riffs will then continue the party get up and dance!! This is the end of festival party and Karl & Crew will make you want to dance with a smile on your face....

Then Mr Slackjaw & The Slack Whores a dream lineup Andrew Tolly (Hasselhof Experiment, Bloody Souls) is Mr Slackjaw with the fearsome Demi Whores backing him up. I would call it a command performance, but I had to ask really nicely.
