Album Preview: The Dead C - Patience

New Zealand noise heroes The Dead C are back with a new album titled Patience. Recorded in Dunedin last summer, the album features four intense and unforgiving tracks of which the band have chosen one for us to stream for you this week.  The track chosen is the last on the album titled "South", Bruce Russell explains why they picked it and in turn provides a perfect intro to the album....

"The final track on the album is the most perfectly-realised. As everything was improvised, as we work through the session we get everything more and more 'bedded'. The recorded sound is tweaked to the maximum, our habituation to the room sound is similarly tweaked, and our confidence is high in the light of what we have already managed to fluke to tape. Patience is a good example of this methodology, since the whole thing was recorded in one session (with drinks breaks) and mixed the next day. In 'South' you can hear the whole thing start from nothing except the prominent earth hum of my amp - prominent because this was recorded at conversational volume. The start was unbearably restrained, with me sitting across the room from the amp, so the slow increase in meaningless guitar noise is caused by the guitar physically approaching the amp as I walked into it. The drums also sound like they started in another room and then marched into the studio - but this is an illusion occasioned by Robbie's skill with the sticks, he has a great volume control - he's the human potentiometer. Michael is layering sounds in real time, playing and looping his characteristically Young/Sampedro riffage like a hazy horse, rather than a crazy one. The song is named after a sub-Allman Brothers hammond organ sample that we intended to overdub on this track, but never did. That's a good enough reason in my book."
