A Low Hum November Tour

A Low Hum November Tour

Tuesday 7th November, 2006 6:18PM

The ALH is gearing up again for a rock fueled tour of New Zealand.

The Rock and Roll Machine
Bloody Souls
The Mysterious Tape Man
Don Julio and the Hispanic Mechanic

Tour #9 and it's a doozy.

Last month's was a mad lineup of genre clashing insanity. I thought in November I'd go the total opposite way and whip together a tour of almost genre specific radness, and a genre that I hadn't toured yet this year. Boy, I am exited, this is one hell of a dance party, and the best dirty ol' rock'n'roll and trash surf music in the country!

They took their sweet time to finally release their crazily long-awaited debut album, but Auckland rock'n'roll stalwarts The Rock and Roll Machine have finally delivered the stonking ripper of a record they've threatened to for so long. They're amping to get down around the country to play this record out and I'm pleased as punch to have the honour of hosting the shows. You MUST see this band. They rule. True story.

I stumbled into a gig of the Bloody Souls in Wellington and was blown away. A review of their show would be the very first thing I would ever write for the then xeroxed ‘zine of mine A LOW HUM in January 2003A I raved in the review and declared my love of this band and wanted to take them on tour. Ironically, it would take me almost 4 years and be on the tour of the very last issue of A LOW HUM that I would finally take this band on tour, it took a while, but I'm stoked it's finally happened. Bloody Souls are quite simply incredible. Rock and Roll at it's nasty and fun best.

Who is he? What does he do? Why does he do it? What can I write about him? Is he on the tour? Why so much mystery? Who is this Mysterious Tape Man? Why did Blink choose such a predictable way to introduce him in this release? Why is Blink talking in the third person? Is The Mysterious Tape Man the most awesome surf genius around? This isn't even a question?

Don Julio and the Hispanic Mechanic have an unbelievably fantastic name. If you're outside of Auckland this is probably all you realize about this soon to be nationally cherished surf trash threesome. For ages these three boys have always stood out to me as being one of the most interesting bands out of Auckland, their twisted rock'n'roll, surf, soul drunken rampages through 50s psychedelica get me all spastic on the dance floor.

On the one hand I'm slightly sad as this is a tour of lasts… the last ever issue of A LOW HUM magazine, and the last time I'll be bringing an A LOW HUM tour to many towns like Nelson, Hamilton, Palmerston North who I have visited every month this year L , but on the other hand, I couldn't have hoped for a better way to say goodbye. With only one more tour to go after this which is “main centres” only…. I'm gonna make sure that this tour is one to remember!

It also features the November compilation CD which features tracks from: The Rock and Roll Machine, Erase Erata, Shaft, Jonny Kinski, The Mysterious Tape Man, Cansei de Ser Sexy, Don Julio and the Hispa nic Mecha nic , DEAN, The Bloody Souls and Ned Collette.

Along with the magazine and compilation CD for that extra fiver you also get the last “feature” album. The Dark Beaks album “Spill your Heart” was self released earlier in the year, but typically as it goes for the best NZ records, its getting rave reviews in magazines and tons of radio play on radio stations around the World, but is criminally looked over at home. It's a gem of a record, recalling the hey-day of Flying Nun jangle pop. I'm totally stoked to be able to get this record to more peoples attention.
