October/November news

Congratulations to members of the IMNZ whanau who earned themselves a Tui in the New Zealand Music Awards for 2006: Fat Freddy's Drop (twice), Frontline, Concord Dawn, Fly My Pretties, Te Reotakiwa Dunn. The Juice TV video awards were also held recently, and trophies were taken out by IMNZ artists Minuit, PNC, Don McGlashan and OdESSA.

IMNZ has been actively involved with the international music industry lately, with IMNZ members attending Popkomm, CMJ and the Indies Summit in Brisbane (run by our sister association AIR; alongside the Q-Music Big Sound conference).

Earlier in the year, LOOP sent six New Zealand musicians - Barnaby Weir, Hollie Smith, Maaka Phat, Alda Rezende, P.Digsss and Recloose - to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to record a collaborative album with some top-notch Brazilian artists. The Kiwi crew worked with more than 70 Brazilian artists to create 'The Bacardi B-Live OE: Brazil', which is out now. You can also catch a documentary about the project on C4 on December 1.

John Psathas' 'View From Olympus' topped the Concert FM charts in October. Rattle Records has also just released 'Te Whaiao', the remixed version of Hirini Melbourne and Richard Nunns' groundbreaking album 'Te Ku Te Whe'. Remixers include Salmonella Dub, Pitch Black, SJD, Stinky Jim, Sola Rosa, The Nomad, Warren Maxwell (ex TrinityRoots) and Epsilon Blue.

The DVD 'Te Vaka Live in Concert' was released on October 30, and it features concert footage from Toata Stadium in Tahiti and Apia Park in Samoa, plus behind the scenes footage from the Tahitian tour. This DVD complements 2002's 'Live in Apia' released in 2002 as it features all new songs (with the exception of 3 tracks which are reworked for these concerts) and 2 new video clips.

Mëstar have put out their new album 'Shut the Squizwot Factories Down' (Arch Hill), based around a land which sprung from the imagination of singer John White. Bridget Sutherland's film Far Off Town, From Dunedin to Nashville, about David Kilgour recording his album in Nashville with Lambchop, was selected to play at the Raindance Film Festival in London, the largest independent film festival in the world. The Festival Jury includes Lou Reed, Dame Judi Dench, Anton Corbijn, Marky Ramone, and other well-known film folk.

Watch out for North Island shows from the WBC, including a Breast Cancer Foundation benefit show at Auckland's Schooner Tavern on November 3. Pig Out are set to release their debut album 'Club Poems' on November 20th on Pinacolada Records. The members of Pig Out are all members of Christchurch based band House Of Dolls and formed Pig Out through a shared love of aspects of electronic and dance music.

Tourist release their debut album 'Minutes Last For Years' via King Music this month, produced by the UK's Greg Haver, who has worked with artists such as Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, Mel C and New Zealand acts The Feelers and Pluto. The band's single Do You Feel The Cold? was nominated as a finalist for the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) out of over 15,000 entries from around the world.

The Recloose live band play two nights in a row at the San Fransisco Bathhouse (November 3 and 4), and both sessions will be professionally recorded and compiled for the release 'Backwards and Sideways' which will come out on Recloose's new imprint, Fingertips Records. The live all star band includes Riki Gooch (ex-TrinityRoots, Bic Runga), Lisa Tomlins (Fat Freddy's Drop, Ebb, Rhombus), Tyna Keelan (Tyna & JB), Mike Fabulous (Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties), Isaac Aesili (OpenSouls, Solaa), plus Recloose of course, and special guest Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy's Drop).

Jayrem have two new releases on the way. Tauranga-based Kokomo celebrate 15 years of touring with a CD and DVD, both are titled 'a Gogo'. Popular Porirua reggae band Random Acts release their debut album 'Act One' on November 3. Mina Ripia and Maaka McGregor ofWai attended Womex in Seville at the end of October to finalise an international tour for 2007.

With great efficiency, Sinate release their album 'Violent Ambitions' a year after their debut 'Beyond Human' came out. They played the Hellfest festival in Brisbane; and they're about to tour with fellow IMNZers Tainted plus Australia's State of Integrity.

Good work Belinda Bradley of Recliner; her cover art for the Recliner album 'Rest Room' is a finalist in the 2007 Independent Music Awards, an international competition held each year for independent labels and artists.

The Trillion Band release their music video/single One More Test this week; and the band are gigging in the South Island in November. Reb Fountain is touring her debut album 'Like Water' with her band, special guest Johnny Barker and guest artists for each show. And A Low Hum tour is heading to Waihi for the very first time on November 12!

Keyboardist/producer Liam Ryan's album 'M2M: Mississippi To Mauao' is about to be released on Torch Records with distribution through Global Routes. The electronica jazz/blues CD will be released locally mid-November in the Bay of Plenty with a national release scheduled for January 07.Watch out for the Torch Songs Band playing tracks from The M2M CD at summer festivals.

The Datsuns join forces with Shihad for a huge summer rock n' roll tour, kicking off in Mangawahi on December 26 and stopping at 10 centres nationwide including Lake Hawea in Wanaka for New Year's Eve and the grand finale in Wellington on January 6th .

Cyphanetik's second video from the 'Commercial Suicide' album is Rollin With Punches, the first video from the Breakin Wreckwordz camp to be shot on film after receiving their first video grant from NZ on Air.

The Ruby Suns are currently touring the country as part of the Low Hum Tour and are supporting USA's Animal Collective in Auckland. James Milne (Reduction Agents/Lawrence Arabia) has flown the coop for the UK for several months. Calvin Johnson and Woelv are doing a small tour that Lil' Chief are helping to arrange; in Auckland, the Nudie Suits will be playing support for him on November 9, and he plays Christchurch and Dunedin on the following two days. Plans are well on their way for Lil' Chief's first movie Road to Kingsland; and the Lil' Chief Xmas party will be held at the Schooner Tavern on December 8.
v DawnRaid are having a crazy time of it at the moment with both the Deceptikonz and Ill Semantics releasing second albums. The Deceptikonz' 'Heavy Rotation' features production by Emile, Sol Messiah, Unknown, Mareko, Nate D and MOS; while Ill Semantics' production is handled by DJCXL with help from Nate D.

Annual Maori music showcase Pao! Pao! Pao! hits Wellington on 17 November. Performers include 4 Corners, previous APRA Maioha Award winners Ruia Aperahama and Whirimako Black, Riki Bennett and Wai. Oakley Grenell (O.G.) is touring the South Island in November on 'The Nice Up' tour, dishing out lashings of dub, reggae, dancehall, jungle, drum and bass and hip hop. The Odd Get Even NZ tour featuring JCK, The Robba and Drums is a showcase of what could be considered "haberdash rappers" (because of their eclectic and diverse styles) from central Auckland who blend rock, electronica, and rap. The 2-week 7-date tour spans the country from Tauranga to Dunedin.

The 'Reo' compilation CD, showcasing a selection of Maori language composers and artists, is released on Monday 27 November on the Maorimusic.com label. The artists were selected in consultation with the Maori radio network; and the compilation consists of a mix of contemporary genres such as R'n'B, rap and soul. Artists include The Big Three (Taranaki), Maria Elliot (Whakatane), Rochelle Biddle (Turangi), Tumamao Harawira (Kaitaia), Riana Atama-Adams (Wellington), Erena Tomoana (Hawkes Bay), Piripi Christie (Rotorua), Charnao (Whanganui), Cilla Gardiner (Tokoroa), Kommikal (Christchurch) with the two bonus tracks by Morgana Watson (Taranaki) and Ranea & Awha (Wellington).

Conan and the Mockasins will be back in NZ shortly for a wee visit before they return to the UK and their winter. They have a single and video coming out in the UK through Parlophone in December. Keep a dogged ear out for local show announcements. Die! Die! Die! are back home for a short visit preparing for tours here and in Australia. Their new EP 'Locust Weeks' is out now.

Acclaimed drum and bass duo State Of Mind (Patrick Hawkins and Stu Maxwell) have released their debut album 'Take Control' on Concord Dawn's Uprising label. They've previously released tracks through Total Science's CIA Recordings, Teebee's Subtitles label, Futurebound's Viper label, Doc Scott's 31 Records, Simon Bassline Smith's Technique Recordings, and two tunes on the 'Bad Company Presents Bad Taste' LP. They're currently planning a USA/European tour for early 2007.

The Indie Club extravaganza has returned to Auckland, with three venues running over three nights every week. Artists performing forthcoming sessions include Fats White, Andrew Keoghan, Mila Gurney, Satan's Little Sister, Urban Tramper and Infinite Flying Kick. Drill Issue 20 is also out now.
