2007 Rumble in the Jungle Final shapes up for interesting showdown

Rumble in the Jungle 2007 has been the most exciting yet, with some major surprises occurring throughout the regional heats.

Rumble in the Jungle is a Drum and Bass DJ competition, in which DJs compete live in a club, showing off their mixing skill in a series of rounds to impress the judges. There are regional heats in the four cities of Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin with a final comprising of the top 2 DJs from each city being held in Wellington on October the 13th.

This year has seen a couple of revelations occur, with the first underage competitor entering and subsequently winning his heat, and also the first female competitor to enter claiming second place in her heat, asserting herself for a spot in the final.

DJ Hank, aka Henry Nicol, from Christchurch is a fifteen year old DJ who needed his parents to accompany him to the club for the Christchurch Heat. His older brother, Offset, also competed, but failed to eclipse his brother in the competition, being knocked out in the first round. Licensing conditions for the San Francisco Bath House, the venue for the national final, require a guardian to be present at all times, so Hanks father will be flying up to Wellington to witness his son attempt to take the competition out.

In the Auckland heat, Darnell Adams, who DJs under the name ‘Darnell’, was the only female competitor to make it into the regional heats. She played the best first round set of all the competitors, and followed that up with some storming second round and third round sets. This was more than enough to earn her second place, and gave her the honour of being the first female DJ to compete in the national final. DJ competitions are not new to her however, with a first place in the recent Nu Breaks DJ competition held by Tag Promotions in Auckland.

Also of interest in the regional heats was the first placing of DJ Static in Auckland. Actually a Wellingtonian, Static was in Auckland for studies for a short time and competed in the Auckland heat only out of convenience. Last year he made it into the top 4 of the Wellington heat.

Once again the final is set to be a cracker event, with anyone of the eight DJs showing the talent to win in the regionals, who knows what’s in store on the 13th of October
