White Swan, Black Swan is partners Sonya Waters and Ben Howe, the mini album has a disc for each swan but each disc is also accompanied by the other with guest musicians as well.
White Swan is Sonya Waters; her half of the mini album is eerie, sad, lonesome and beautiful and has a certain charm about it with heartbreaking lyrics. I loved Finger and Nail, I conjured up thoughts of Sonya as a plaything at a circus, just pulled out occasionally to perform. Ladyboy and Giant Light take on more of an Americana vibe; Sonya has such a beautiful voice and is as versatile as they come (Sonya is a voice coach and has an illustrious career in NZ music spanning back to the 70’s). Ben Howe is Black Swan. Having never heard his voice before I was amazed! He sounds like a mix of Tom Waits and Nick Cave, but still has his own unique sound. Ben and Sonya are great songwriters; their lyrics actually mean something, which is somewhat rare these days. Standout for me is Bands and Pets, I LOVE the keyboard and want to know what it is! The words to this song are funny, true and uplifting, sung in quiet a deadpan style…I fully recommend this album as one to add to your collection.
