What a treat! From 4 - 7pm well be hosting Andrew London (Hot Club Sandwich, The Cattlestops) and his new band. $10 on the door, well be serving High Tea.
Over the last 20 years Andrew London has become a constant feature on New Zealands musical landscape. With fellow Wellingtonian Terry Crayford, London has taken his trio Hot Club Sandwich to arts and jazz festivals all over Australasia. His quirky and satirical songs form the backbone of the trios repertoire and resulted, in 2004, in a rare four star review in Downbeat USA - the worlds most widely-read and longest running jazz magazine.
He shares songwriting duties with fellow Kapiti musician James Cameron in The Cattlestops - a country rock band proudly hailing from the Coast. The Cattlestops album, Back To Rosetta Rd was shortlisted for the Best Country Album Tui award in 2007, and no less than six original songs were featured in the locally shot movie Second Hand Wedding, London and Cameron claiming three apiece.
Up until now Ive been writing with either Hot Club Sandwich or The Cattlestops in mind says London but lately Im trying to ignore those mental limitations and just write what comes along. Im enjoying gathering a group of musicians together and asking them to play a repertoire of songs culled from my history with both bands, and some that have not yet been recorded. Its very liberating to be able to play a range of styles - some jazz or blues-flavoured; some leaning more towards folk or country - and others that perhaps havent even settled into their final style, structure or rhythm.
The new band currently features Andrew’s wife , Kirsten, on bass, Ross McDermott on lap steel guitar, Carylann Martin on accordion and Evan Williams on drums.
