The original gospel-blues-calypso rent party for dancers, freaks and hipsters returns to the Wine Cellar for another summer of late night housewrecking, with new NZ dates announced by Storehouse.
Singer/guitarist Tom Rodwell, described as Sheffield's answer to Lightnin' Hopkins by the NME, tours continually in the UK, USA, Switzerland and Holland, but finds himself very much at home in the Cellar - with wild residencies at the venue's birth in 2004/2005 as well as in 2007/2008. 2009/2010 will no doubt be equally as jumping - Storehouse gigs are frequently all-night affairs - featuring the diverse musical talents of Joe Pineapple, Shadow, Tony Flamingo and the enigmatic Guest Speaker. Expect raw, ramshackle and radical.
Equally as intellectually engaging as it is dance-orientated, a Storehouse show presents blues and spirituals music as a living, breathing, sweating part of the here and now - not the cheesy retro-by-the-numbers blooze cliches we're used to running a mile from. Come for the grit - but stay for the groove. Dancing is strongly encouraged.
Rodwell manages to eschew the cliches that beset blues music. By turns wild, angry, hypnotic and sensual, it's as uncompromising as it is funky and some of the best live music I've seen. - Blues in London.
Raw, avant-garde improvisations, - Metro.
