Prolific producer, legend of Drum n Bass and jungle, world renowned DJ and label owner, Mampi Swift makes just his third visit to New Zealand. When you’re big enough to dwarf king kong, international travel isn’t the most comfortable experience, so when he does make it over, it’s a rare, and eagerly awaited, treat. Whether you know him from his scene defining anthems, or his unstoppable, peerless, constant double-drop dj sets, its well accepted that his visits are un-missable occasions. Team him with multiple-award winning MC IC3 and you’ve got a colossal night of music.

It was in 1990 that Mampi Swift starting DJing and found himself behind the counter of the Lucky Spin record store in London. 1992 saw the start of an 8 year residency on Kool FM, whilst at the same time he was regularly at events such as One Nation and True Playaz at The End, Warning, Detonate and every other A-list night. He released tunes on other labels such as True Playaz, Frontline, Suburban Base, SOUR & K Power, before setting up his own label Charge Recordings.

Mampi Swift launched the label with the release of Twisted and Feel Good in 1997. Both tracks were massive hits in the UK and rapidly spread worldwide. Not a bad start, but it was his 3rd release, The One, which dropped in the winter of 97 that earned him recognized fame throughout the world. You could not be in the scene and not know of Mampi Swift after that. To this day it is still being sampled and played by many DJs. 2001 saw the release of his EP, Resurrection, featuring the dance floor destroying anthem Trippin. The four tunes made such an impact during their dub-plate life it left clubbers mouths watering for the release. This preceded countless hits, his debut LP ‘Future Mainframe’ and 2005’s follow up ‘Music Forever’, as well as tunes like ‘Dogsploitation’ (w/ Bad Company), Rebirth, ‘Zion’ and ‘One Finger’.

Being careful to not over expose his new tunes - they are rarely released prior to promos. He relentlessly still plays with dubplates/vinyl and refuses to use CDs when playing gigs - he is wisely attempting to keep the record industry alive for future generations.

But, you aren’t here to watch him in the studio, but in his true element – at the controls of two, no scratch that, THREE Technics 1200 turntables. Widely regarded as one of the most technical djs in the world, he has been successful enough to be in the Top 3 of Drum n Bass djs throughout the 90s and 2000s, regularly coming second to the one like Andy C. Given that he didn’t have a label like Ram or True Playaz sitting behind him its no small feat. He comes like a hurricane, packing records between the turntables and mixer for easy access as he slips them into the mix quicker than you can blink. His record crate is packed full of everything that’s anything in Drum n Bass, befitting one of the UKs true A-list DJs.
