A huge night of Funk, Soul and Afrobeat with Dunc tha Funk, Kenese,
Don Luchito, Radar and Colynjah. Entry is by donations of tinned food,
blankets and warm clothes which go to the City Mission.
Back in 2000 Dunc tha Funk was helping his mate Uncle Barnie change a
door on his old Valiant. Whilst working Dunc slipped a JBs CD into
the stereo. Soon the track Givin Up Food for Funk came on and Dunc
said wouldnt it be great to have a gig where people gave food to
get into a Funk gig. The job was finished, but Dunc was left with the
question of what to do with the food.
A month or so later Dunc was listening to 95bFM and an interview came
on about the City Mission. The Mission said that everyone gives loads
at Christmas as they feel guilty about what they are spending on
themselves, but that winter was the time they really needed it and
that winter was often a slow time for donations.
Dunc now had the perfect charity and with Queens Birthday weekend
coming up he saw the perfect opportunity. Being a long weekend he
figured that the Sunday of a long weekend was like the second Saturday
and he noticed that no-one was putting on any gigs. Dunc talked to a
venue and then rounded up a few of his mates to play some records, and
so Givin Up Food for Funk started.
Filling his car boot and half filling the Auckland City Missions food
banks with donated food at each party has kept Dunc motivated to make
these parties an annual event for the last 10 years. He has been
inspired by the way people have got behind the parties with some
people clearing out their entire pantries to donate. The thought that
some people have gone to is also exciting with Dunc quoting one person
rocking up to the door with cans and saying this
is the entree, this is the main and here is the dessert. Dunc says
that these are the most fun parties that he puts on as everyone feels
good that they have donated something and that sets a really good tone
for the party.
Heres to another 10 years of Givin Up Food for Funk.
