LA PETITE MANOUCHE
Following the release of their debut album Legacy in February 2011, La Petite Manouche have been actively touring around New Zealand and Australia performing in festivals, clubs and bars to widespread appreciation from a range of different audiences. The music is a touch of French gypsy jazz music (Django Reinhardt, etc.) mixed with modern jazz, a dash of classical and a lot of fun.
“This debut album from Christchurch musicians Robbie Averill and Burke Goffe transports you to the warm cobbled streets of Europe.” – The Press (Feb, 2011).
In December, La Petite Manouche will be hitting the roads of New Zealand’s South Island, joined by guest singer-songwriter Nadia Reid (Gold Sounds) on selected shows in Nelson and Picton. They will be bringing with them a new, energetic stage show and turning up the amplifier on the gypsy jazz experience.
GYPSY JAZZ
The style of gypsy jazz music was created in the time of WWII by an illiterate French gypsy named Django Reinhardt. The music is essentially traditional French musettes, waltzes and folk music blended with the swing and jazz music brought to Paris in WWII by (primarily African-American) jazz musicians travelling from American in search of a better life, away from racism and discrimination. Django spent most of his life doing what he wanted; enjoying himself, relaxing, and playing music.
