Two of the world’s most talented roller derby players and coaches are headed to Godzone this January to share their skills with New Zealand and you’re invited!
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Mel Mangles and Scratcher in the Eye of Rose City Rollers hit our fair shores in January and will be hosting a two-day camp in sunny Mount Maunganui.
Whether you’re still lapping up summer’s sun or need a mid-week break from your first month back after New Year’s, join Mangles and Scratcher for two fast and furious evenings to learn everything they know about the world’s fastest growing sport.
Mel Mangles tarted derby with current world champions Oly Rollers in 2006, moving to Rose City in 2009. She was quickly drafted onto Rose City’s all-star team and has been voted one of the top skaters in the Pacific Northwest. She was voted league MVP in 2010 and has been dubbed “The Chuck Norris of Roller Derby” by announcing powerhouse Val Capone. Sassy New Zealand skaters will love her no nonsense, motivational and exceptionally smart style of derby, as well as her philosophy that no skill has a right or wrong way. Gather as much skill as you can from this great coach and create your own style of play.
Scratcher in the Eye has been skating with Rose City Rollers since 2006 and has been on their all-star team since 2008. In 2010 she was nominated captain and helped her team to fifth in the world. Scratcher donned the famous jammer star for her team when Rose City made it to WFTDA championships for the first time in 2011 and did her team proud with her trademark zippy agility and breakneck speed.
Rose City Rollers is currently ranked fourth in the world, and after a meteoric rise to WFTDA championships in 2011, you know you’re guaranteed top notch training from these two wonderful women.
