If your groin itches at the thought of psychedelia in all its guises then bring cream, because SAN FRAN once again are the providers of three Wellington bands, past (returning from Europe) and present who will leave you uncomfortable and raw, in a good way..' $10 on the door

Here’s something you don’t hear often: ‘free improv’ that you can get down and party to. Using theremin, gamelan, biscuit tin guitar, electric bass carillion, sexmouse marimba (whatever that is) and more, Wellington’s ORCHESTRA OF SPHERES lurches wildly from a Radio Tarifa-like opening (Hypercube) to near-Klezmer dance music (Spontaneous Symmetry), electronica that sounds almost like a Pete Namlook soundscape until the vocals kick in (Eternal C Of Darkness), long semi-psychedelic excursions reminiscent of groups like Spirit (Hypersphere, Ulululul) and free jazz (Toadstone).

The group aren’t averse to plenty rhythm either – they’ve already had a hit with Boltzmann Brain on Radio Active and I think that beneath the humour, they’re dead serious; they’re after your brain and your feet. Orchestra of Spheres, a recent product of the Frederick Street collective, describe their sound as “Unfolding shapes and rhythms, permutating through time and space, using mathematical ratios of rhythm and chaos patterns of sound”. This means, in terrestrial language, that listeners are confronted with a tantalising mix of acoustic instruments and electronica that invites them to dance and listen simultaneously – no mean feat (or, as the group might put it,
no mean feet).

Thought Creature:
Cavernously portentous and also curiously soft, singer/guitarist Will Rattray’s vocals recall those of Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy, as does some of the guitar work - that kind’vearid psychedelia also found in the early Cure, with sporadic buzzes that remind you of a web-transfixed fly. Danny Brady provides both Hook-y New Order basslines as well as knowing when to tone (or tune) it down a notch; Peter Copeland nimbly switches between acoustic and electronic drums (v.non-cliched used of the electronic clap)- imagine
Superpitcherremixing the Cramps.

Badd Energy are a psychedelic mix of guitars, drum machines and genres. Sam Moore, Coco Solid, Trixie Darko and J.Suave make up this trippy quartet that kick out motley jams blending stoner-swamp riffs with laid back 808 raps.
