“Without one word of story-telling hyperbole, I swear the hairs on the back of my neck stood up on end and I got a chill when they played. I was a fan. Instantly and immediately. They were amazing.” Cheese on Toast, 2011

The Checks announce ‘The Gunpowder and Rain Tour’, their first headline excursion  since the release of Deadly Summer Sway in November.  With support act Sherpa in tow they will be hitting Palmerston North, Wellington and Napier across Easter weekend (April  5 - 8).

In keeping with their unpredictable reputation; drummer Jacob Moore was left behind in a foreign country for the third time after three sold out Australian shows last week.  The Checks played to capacity crowd in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne as the new album begins to demand more and more attention over the ditch.  The Checks, sans drummer, made their way back to headline 95bFM’s Summer Series with only half an idea of how they were going to play with out a drummer.... However, needless to say, they scraped through once again as he arrived moments before they hit the Auckland stage.

The Checks third studio album Deadly Summer Sway received exceptional reviews from Time Out, Cheese on Toast, Stuff.co.nz, Groove Guide, Otago Daily Times and a plethora of other media. The album peaked at #3 on the independent music charts and singles ‘Candyman Shimmer’ and ‘Ready to Die’ have had significant radio play across Alternative and Rock stations.

“...The Checks have well and truly shed any perceived shackles of expectations upon them – it sounds like, what I imagine, whatever-the-fuck they want it to...it’s as uncompromising as it is unpretentious. It’s experimental and exploratory. It’s exciting and addictive. I’d go so far to say, it’s the best thing they have ever done, so far...”  Andrew Tidball, Cheese on Toast, 2011

“They show a hint of humour, a little more groove and funk, and a definite joy in being pretty nutty.”  Lydia Jenkin, Time Out, 2011

Adding to the shenanigans, support act Sherpa are releasing their debut album Lesser Flamingo on April 2nd.  Self-described as “the sound of a flamingo giving birth to a band playing music”, the album is overflowing with psychedelic power-pop goodies sitting high on the 95bFM top ten. A 12-track technicolor experience complete with summertime hooks, glossy guitars and fluttering synthesizers.  Their live show is quirky and exciting with wacky costumes, stage props and filled to the brim with contagious dance energy.

Don’t miss ‘The Gunpowder and Rain Tour’ this easter.
