- by Amanda Ratcliffe The Altitude has played host to many exciting acts in the past and Shayne Malone’s gig on Thursday night can be added to the ever growing list – because they’re worth it! The first time I saw these guys play was on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Shake the Lake in Hamilton. Their tunes were so catchy I couldn’t resist seeing them at a more rock n’ roll venue to suit their style. Only a handful of people turned up to see opening act The Lookie Loo’s who got the show started with a few songs off their EP, Timing is Everything before getting stuck into some new material. Recognizing some of these songs from previous gigs was a real treat and hopefully they will grace a new album for my stereo to enjoy soon too! Guitarist Dan Reece and bassist Alex Mustard grinned their way through the set while the others were more than happy just to do their thing and play for the people seated at the tables around the venue. Shayne Malone’s band was quick to take to the stage and get the party going with Better and Masquerade off their album, Real Life Games. Having only been released in August last year, it was awesome to see some girls singing and dancing along to the tunes they love off the CD. Rocking out to a Killers cover Somebody Told Me, it was obvious that the dancing gals and the lads were enjoying every moment of it – especially guitarist Odee Rose, who might I add had a super cool guitar that I’m damn sure he pinched off Flight of the Conchords star Brett McKenzie! One of the tunes which got stuck in my head from their previous show was Who’s Your Hero? Sounding a lot like rocker Bon Jovi we were taken from the Altitude and thrown into one of those massive stadium concerts that sell-out within minutes. Coming to an end of their set, you’d think that these guys would have run out of energy, but this was not the case at all. Finishing their colourful show with Led Zepplin favourite Rock n’ Roll which was performed with as much enthusiasm as the songs they opened with. For a rocky night out with all the bells and whistles, check these guys out – because you’re worth it.
