Celebrating 9 years of releasing seismic sounds and sly genius musical manoeuvres, the Auckland imprint run by Stinky Jim is not known for blowing its own trumpet. However a little bit of Jericho Wall style parping is required for a label showcase this dynamic.
SJD and band have been busy over the summer on the festival trail (including a brace of stunning performances at WOMAD), but this will be a rare Auckland club date from the outfit that bought us those songs from the TVCs (Beautiful Haze and I Wrote This Song For You) and certified NZ classic albums Lost Soul Music and Southern Lights as work commences on the follow-up to Songs From A Dictaphone.
Not for nothing was Slowpoke the debut album from Phelps & Munro heavily featured and rated amongst the 118 Great New Zealand Albums in Grant Smithies Soundtrack book, its a work of unbridled genius that stands alone amongst its peers. One of the very few local acts picked and played by John Peel on his legendary Radio 1 show after his visit to New Zealand some years ago, P&M are best known for the b-Net classic Horse Winning Without Rider and for discombobulating audiences into a frenzy of delight with his infrequent, un-missable, MPC based, live sets.
James Duncan is most frequently seen strutting the stage as axe-spanker for SJD, Dimmer and his own Click Clack, however his day jobs are quite different to his own personal and utterly unique, musical outpourings. Performing material from his Mirror Minor EP and the hopefully, soon come debut album Duncan brings depth and beauty with his laptoperations and will be setting the Riot off right, lobbing a gentle musical Molotov or two to kick off proceedings.
The latest signings to Round Trip Mars, The Naked And Famous complete the deliciously diverse and ludicrously lovely line-up. Already the most talked about band of 08, with a 5 star Sunday Star Times review under their belt and the song Serenade spending a frankly greedy four weeks at #1 on the Radioscope National Alt Chart, The Naked And Famous have truly arrived. The Galatos audience can expect to hear all of their This Machine EP as well as a clutch of tunes from its forthcoming follow up, and will be left in absolutely no doubt as to what all the fuss is about.
Completing the line-up is a not-to-be missed DJ appearance from the irrepressible Maiden Hong Kong as well as some selected sides from label head honcho Stinky Jim.
