WOW (AUS) - The Naked And Famous – Kittentank - Bar Bodega - Tuesday 3rd March

WOW: Sydney garage/electro outfit WOW have had a huge year-and-a-bit since they began in late 2007! Originally starting as a 2-piece with Matt Cribb and Bree Carter, they have recently expanded to include Matt Blance (DJ Drugmoney) on Drums, and Stephen J Mitchell (Emergency! Emergency!) on Synth & Electronics.

On the live front, WOW went on to play with a multitude of local and international bands including Crystal Castles, Ladytron, Lady GaGa, Holy Fuck, El Guincho, Telepathe, Van She and Grafton Primary. They also made appearances at the Big Day Out, Parklife, Field Day and Playground Weekender festivals in Sydney, as well as a headline slot at The Hanoi International Music Festival in Vietnam in early 2008. WOWs live shows have become rather notorious - the band have been kicked off stage twice already. Their on-stage recipe for a good time usually always includes strobe lights, lots of alcohol, 90s trance covers n a whole bunch of party accessories.

On the recorded front, WOW released the Common Species 7" in early 2008 on New York via Hong Kong label Metal Postcard after just one live show. They followed this up with the My Holiday In Space EP on Sydneys Levity label in August 2008, which was produced by Scott Horscroft (The Presets). The Bumblebeez reworking of WOWs Icy Cold has been a staple on Sydney radio this summer, and WOW themselves have just completed remixes of songs by Ladytron and Tennis.

The Naked And Famous: Quite possibly the best band you’ve never heard (yet), Auckland’s The Naked And Famous won’t be a secret for too much longer. With two EPs “This Machine” and “No Light” on Round Trip Mars (home to SJD, Phelps & Munro, James Duncan, Unitone HiFi etc) through Universal NZ, they are already further down the track than many who have been around a lot longer. The band, are based around the ferociously talented pairing of composer/control freak Thom Powers and vocal siren/lyricist Alisa Xayalith, though they operate as a 4 piece live.

With a bunch of gigs and whole heap of interest from all over in the interim, the band unleashed EP2 “No Light” in September 08, scoring the top of Radioscope Alt Charts, and much critical acclaim. From the CMJ Music Marathon in New York where they played three sets in 36 hours to the Big day Out and Rhythm and Vines – this band are one to watch!
