Audio Foundation presents Dutch composer/performer/inventor Jan-Bas Bollen and his new instrument the HyperTheremin, supported by local electronic instrument composer/inventor Jess Robinson.
The HyperTheremin is a touchless, magical instrument designed by Dutch composer Jan-Bas Bollen. It allows him to create captivating sonic and visual poetry through manipulation of invisible controls, revealed only by a precise choreography of his hands in space. Cleverly programmed faders and switches are positioned in a virtual, multi-dimensional console, physically detached from the real world. Bollen’s feedback consists of the choreography’s result itself: sounds from loudspeakers and visuals from projectors.
Jan-Bas Bollen studied composition at the Royal Conservatory The Hague. Internationally active as a composer, performer and educator, he creates music for soloists, ensembles, theatre productions
and installation art. In many of his works he employs live-electronics with visuals and he is often using cutting-edge technologies such as the HyperTheremin. He regularly collaborates with dancers and choreographers and is also an electric bass player, DJ and producer of club tracks under the moniker BAZR.
Jessica Robinson a composer and sound artist from Tāmaki Makaurau, currently completing her studies in composition and mechatronics engineering at the University of Auckland. She is interested in exploring the overlap between these fields, through live coding, algorithmic composition and digital musical instrument design.
Glitchcraft is a novel digital instrument that explores glitches as a way to shift the relationship between instrument and player during performance, celebrating the unreliability of digital technology.
