The Shrugs & Onanon South Island shows
Date Added : 3rd June, 2009 @ 10:51
Hamilton indie-folk-country-punk band The Shrugs take a jaunt to the South Island
accompanied by Dunedinites Onanon. Over their eight-or-so years of existence, the Shrugs have slowly become a legendary band in their home town of Hamilton, NZ. They have become known as genius pop songwriters with a huge catalogue of instantly memorable tunes. The Shrugs’ perfectly-crafted songs and consummate musicianship are contrasted with humorous, self-deprecating lyrics. They’ve never been ashamed of being called ‘classic Kiwi underachievers; in fact, they revel in it.
The Shrugs’ fourth album, entitled How to Knit a Pony, was released on Waysafe Records in association with I Am Evil Records in May 2008 to widespread critical acclaim.
The Shrugs have found kindred spirits in Dunedin band Onanon, who also favour a similar
DIY approach to music making in New Zealand. The popular four-peice band continue the
fine Dunedin tradition of great song-writing combined with unhinged guitar mayhem, adding their own distinctive brand of twisted weirdness along the way. Onanon’s songs are known for
their barbed pop hooks, darkly humorous lyrics and their sheer ferocity when played live.
Onanon’s latest album Home Baking was the debut 12” release on new Dunedin vinyl-only
record label Monkey Killer Records. Monkey Killer Records are planning further limited
edition vinyl releases in the future including a 7” from new Dunedin band Mountaineater
(featuring ex HDU front man Tristan Dingemans). Home Baking is also available via I Am Evil Records and will be album of the week on Kiwi FM, beginning June 8.
