Cybiont is a man on a mission. Last year’s adventurous triple debut album ‘A Trilogy Of Random Thoughts And Considerations’ was quickly followed up by the intriguing ‘Angels And Demons’. Now, just 8 months later and a mere 12 months after the debut, he’s back again with another helping of his own particular brand of song-writing – and this time it’s a double helping!

Despite its sometimes gloomy nature, ‘Music From A Living Universe & The Dark Side Of My Spoon’ is definitely another step forward in Cybiont’s short, yet prolific career. Having already made clear in his previous releases that he is a song-writer with a lot on his mind, carefully selected collaborations from a couple of artists and, in particular the accompanying female vocals on several tracks from Melissa Malthus, Mia Chameleon and Sojin Park mean that the musical arrangements and harmonies have boosted the lyrical quality.

The album is split into two distinctly contrasting discs. Disc 1, ‘Music From A Living Universe’ is similar in content to previous releases, albeit with that improved sound. Tracks like “Symphony Of Life” or “Attraction” still evoke strong emotions and reveal Cybiont’s general concerns about life and the planet we live in.

Disc 2, on the other hand, is much darker than anything we have heard before. “Dreams Running Out” asks us “what happens when the dreams run out” while “Planetary Panic” or “Deep Down The Rabbit Hole” dish out handsome helpings of solace and despair. Even by the artist’s own standards parts of the second disc are extremely dark and will take a while to digest. However, he is more than justified in attempting to evoke feelings which listeners may well not want to experience, but might, or rather should want to stand up and fight against.

There is always a glimmer of hope though, even in Cybiont’s world. Closing track, the delightful “Look For The Moon”, whose bittersweet lyrics are soothed by Mia Chameleon’s vocals, suggests there is light at the end of the tunnel, but more importantly it typifies the development in Cybiont’s music.

Top Track: “Look For The Moon” iMusicate says: 8/10

“Deep down the rabbit hole, is where I find my soul”
