Lyttleton Comes to Tamaki (Steve Abel, Tiny Lies, Marlon Williams live)

On Saturday 21 July, Auckland’s Wine Cellar will be played with a fine palate of musical vintages. Christchurch and Lyttelton’s alt-folk/country enthusiasts The Tiny Lies and
Marlon Williams will join Queen City balladeer Steve Abel.

The Wine Cellar hosts Christchurch’s 'The Tiny Lies' for the first time. Having released their debut E.P ‘Trials’ in September 2011, Charlotte Ivey (vocals, occasional harmonica) and Harley Williams (guitar, vocals), have since spent time touring the country with the Lyttelton-based group, the Harbour Union whilst working on new material for their debut album.

The Tiny Lies' sound has been described as embodying a twisted gentleness”, and draws on themes of love, loss and the many shadows lying in-between.

“It is art embraced with both hands.” - Vicki Anderson on the Tiny Lies’ E.P Trials.

The Tiny Lies are accompanied by their much-loved comrade, Marlon Williams, for a set of whiskey-soaked country odes. Williams, the lead singer and songwriter of Lyttelton's country band, The Unfaithful Ways, has recently been nominated for Country Song of the Year in this year's APRA Country Music Awards for his very fine song ‘Ghost of this Town’ (from The Harbour Union album).

Joining The Tiny Lies and Marlon Williams is well-known New Zealand song-writer and musician, Steve Abel, who will be performing a set of old and new material from his highly impressive oeuvre. Abel is expecting a special guest appearance by US cohort Shahzad Ismaily.

Abel's third LP, Luck/Hope, is due for release later in 2012 with the first single Best Thing having just been released on 28 May.

“Abel is a refined writer whose lyrics have a bone-bare quality – the sound of someone writing and singing from a place where there is no guile, just hard truth and clear eyes.” - Graham Reid, elsewhere.co.nz

In repetition of a sterling outing in Lyttleton’s Wunderbar earlier this year this trio of acts are expected to share the stage for some songs to close the night.
