Following their sell-out show at Titirangi Festival of Music 2016, ACAPOLLiNATiONS (led by TUi MAMAKi of The Mamaku Project), are delighted to bring their evocative vocals back into the resonant domed architecture of Te Uru’s Gallery Two.
This performance takes place amidst an exhibition of stunning photographs from around the Asian region by Brian Brake and Steve McCurry. Lit by Jon Baxter's enchanting light forest, this purely acapella trio will perform their hauntingly sassy adaptations of Balkan Polyphony with an Aotearoa/NZ improvisation twist…
Tui Mamaki's love affair with traditional Bulgarian song took her there a few years ago. Her annual collaboration with Chelsea Prastiti (Greek-Kiwi) and Siobhan Grace (Samoan-Kiwi) on zesty irregular rhythms and stirringly close harmonies is a rare treat and undoubtedly a compelling musical moment.
The exhibition Picturing Asia: Double Take: The photography of Brian Brake and Steve McCurry is co-presented by Auckland Arts Festival and Te Uru, and supported by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Te Papa gratefully acknowledges the gift of the Brian Brake Collection by Wai-man Lau.
This promises to be an exquisite multicultural musical experience!
ACAPOLLiNATiONS have been described as:
"Hauntingly beautiful…" Hamish Nathan (Director of Hamilton Garden Arts Festival 2014)
"Beautiful, unique, holding the audience with just the power of the voice…" David Parker (Director of Titirangi Festival of Music 2016)
"Exquisitely crafted arrangements transport the audience to another time and place…" Karen Hunter (Musical Director of Prana Festival NZ 2016)
