Flashback Foundry; cause they just don’t make bands like the use to.

In the 90’s, the world was a better place. For a brief time, everything just felt right. On Campus, everyone hung out at the Ilam Cafe. You could “rock your socks off’ at Dux de Lux in Arts Centre, and Strait Jacket Fits headlined Orientation. If you wanted to see all the cool bands, you went to The Ballroom!

When we collectively decided it was time to move on from chunky highlights, bell bottoms, and Von Dutch trucker hats, as if there’s anything better, we also left behind some of the best era in Christchurch music that there ever was.

We are bringing that all back with The Bats, Jordan Luck, The Undercurrents and the Wendys in our FLASHBACK FOUNDRY night with MC the legendary Sam Cutler - former tour manager of the Rolling Stones!

Come and reminisce about the good all days, cause they just don’t make bands like they use to.

The Bats are an influential New Zealand rock band formed in 1982 in Christchurch, although The Bats have strong links to Dunedin and are usually grouped in with the Dunedin sound musicians that emerged in the early 1980s... The band has retained the same four members from 1982 to the present day. They have regularly toured in their home country of New Zealand and successfully undertaken many tours of the USA, Europe, the UK and Australia. The Bats singer songwriter/guitarist, Robert Scott and bassist/producer Paul Kean both reside in the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame for their achievements, respectively with The Clean and Toy Love.

Joined by Kaye Woodward on lead guitar/backing vocals and drummer Malcolm Grant, this combination produces a surprisingly wide range of material with songs from twisted wistful folk to psychedelic rock to bouncy twee pop. But whatever the song style, The Bats’ sound is always distinctively and unmistakably The Bats - the mark of a great band. And you will be move by them.

‘Legend’ is a word suffering from chronic overuse syndrome these days, but when it comes to Jordan Luck, the word regains its full meaning and one the NZ public associates with this true blue Kiwi artist. This affection is obviously felt amongst his musical peers as well who bestowed Jordan Luck the honour of Inaugural Inductee into the New Zealand Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame and in 2015, The NZ Music Legacy Award.

As front man and pop-writing genius with the legendary Exponents, he clocked up a staggering 18 Top 40 singles over the years, with ‘Victoria’ recently voted by the public as the 8th greatest New Zealand song of all time. Jordan’s blend of pop rock genius from the past, present and future… back to the masses!

The Undercurrents’ story began huddled around the conray heater in the Christchurch Winter of 2003, writing songs and jamming tunes. Not long after, they recorded a self-titled EP which resulted in their song ‘Wish upon a Star’ getting the number one spot on the BFM Charts and their nomination for Best Independent Release at the 2004 B-Net Awards. In 20015 they won the RDU Round UP Band Competition, which led to their next EP featuring the track ‘Ocean Wide’ recorded by Rob Mayes of Fail Safe Records.

Dressed as lifeguards to save the musically drowned, The Wendys are the drunken threesome love child of Link Wray, Dick Dale and Buddy Holly. Hailing from Christchurch, New Zealand, The Wendys’ brand of surf rock and garage punk has stolen the hearts of unsuspecting audiences nationwide.

The band have headlined major international surf comps: the Single Fin Mingle 2015 and 2016 in Sumner NZ, the Quicksilver Classic ‘16 in Kaikoura, NZ, The Ray White Duke Festival of Surfing 2017 and South Coast Board Riders Surf Festival Dunedin 2018.

The Wendys also headlined the Punch Club stage with a blistering set at Nostalgia Festival 2016 alongside Tami Neilson and The Phoenix Foundation and have played sold out venues along the east coast of NZ.
