PAWA presents: ‘Suspending Time: Meditations for accessing alternate space/time in music’ by Lou Drago

‘Music makes time audible’ - Susanne Langer

In most Western music we listen within a linear, horizontal, framework, recalling what has already been heard and anticipating what will come next. Through repetition, however, there comes the possibility of experiencing music vertically. By being liberated from considering a piece’s past and future, the present can expand, making it possible to enter the “vertical time of the piece.”

There is a similarity between this alternative mode of listening to music and numerous meditation and mindfulness practices that emphasise the importance of focusing on the present. Lou Drago sees it, meditation can be used as a way of avoiding thought in order to temporarily alleviate oneself from the weight of self-consciousness and other anxieties.

In ‘Suspending Time’ Drago speculates on various types of music which may generate an experience of non-linear time. This work hypotheses that these two factors, meditation and non-linear listening, are interdependent. The experience of vertical time can have a meditative effect, yet effectively one must be meditating – be alleviated from conscious thought – to be able to experience time vertically.

The session will take place from 4pm until sunset.

You are invited to come and interact with the music with the objective of attempting to experience a suspension of time.

You may come and go at any point during the session.

Koha is welcomed.

Lou Drago is an artist, curator, and writer working in the field of queer, feminist and gender theories. Their recent work has been from a position of uniting those who feel they have failed a neoliberalist, capitalist mould, and works with ideas of attempting to engage what they feel to be an increasingly fractured ‘left’. Interested particularly in ideas of gender abolitionism within feminist discourse, Drago attempts to raise awareness of the oppressive stereotypes that hetero-patriarchal society enforces. Perpetually frustrated with the futility of binaries, Drago aims to prove the complexities of any given situation and to avoid reductive binary approaches. Drago is a founding member of XenoEntities Network, Berlin, and host of TRANSIENCE, a monthly show on Cashmere Radio, Berlin.
