Gig Information

Michael Morley is a total sound art luminary. From 1985 to 2019 he’s been responsible for over 100 audio releases as Gate, The Dead C, The Righteous Yeah, The Fuck Chairs, Sun Valley, and that is not even counting collaborations. Music for The Never Quartet is a three-hour drone set developed out of a thirty-year exploration of the guitar and sound as art. And a recent US-EU tour.
To be specific, four acoustic guitars are placed on solid wooden furniture, then electronic bows are placed on the strings of each guitar. The guitar bodies amplify the bowed strings, which the furniture further amplifies, creating a lush and generous tonal field. The quartet modifies the sound by adding wooden blocks, bowls and rods on top of and underneath the instruments.
And for all you joiners, during the installation people are encouraged to record and play back loops of the quartet on their personal mobile devices and contribute to the composition and performance in real time.

This is part of We Are Not Prepared, a late-night Wednesday programme of time-stretching performances, film and talks at the Christchurch Art Gallery.

art/noise, Michael Morley
