Gig Information

A little bit naughty, a whole lot heartfelt, and pretty dang fun, his songs have been called hilarious, beautiful and tragically sad at the same time. The Dauphin of Mississippi first played the Globe on his 'North Island Charm Offensive' tour with songwriting legend Dave Dondero two years ago. The next day he flew to Nashville to record an album that features the likes of 14-time Grammy-winner Dan Tyminski (Oh Brother, Union Station) and other current and future Nashville legends. Now he's coming back as part of his New Zealand Bucket list tour, the first tour promoting The Book of Vanities, 10 heartbreaking and hilarious tales of ego and self from those sessions.

He'll be accompanied by New Zealand's Dave Rawlings, multi-instrumental virtuoso Dusty Burnell (Frank Burkitt Band, T-Bone Trio) and the brilliant and crafty Itallian Dr. Giocomo Giorli (The Infamous Bourbon Boys, The Melling Station Boys) from the hills Tuscany by way of Hawaii. With backing vocals from madame Claire Ellen Lukens.

And he's also bringing another of his favorite songwriters along, the charming and hilarious Lost BiRD (Ali Whitton) of Wellington, via the U.K. You may have read about him for opening Ed Sheeran's stadium gigs in Auckland of from any number of terrific RNZ performances. He's truly one of the most earnest and charming songwriters we've ever heard (and occasionally naughty).

Our plan is to make you laugh, ache, smolder, fall in love, recoil in horror, sing in public and miss everyone you've ever loved, and for these few moments we are together, to feel a part of something bigger than ourselves. There's a whole bunch of quotes at the bottom that reckons we can pull it off, so, we hope you'll join us.

Bucketlist Item: Meet new friends. My original NZ bucketlist before moving here 3 years ago simply said Meet new friends, write a lot of songs, see some stuff, and mess with former Prime Minister Bill English (My New Neighbor!) I did all that within my first couple months. And Denise and the great folks at the Globe were some of those new friends who said to come on back. I said I would. Now it's come time for leaving NZ(heading to California) and I hope to see you guys again. Plus, your beautiful country has given me so many songs, I'd like to share some back with you face to face. At least let you vet some of the things I'll be telling the world about you.

About LOST BiRD:
Compared to Bright Eyes, Tallest Man on Earth, or Richard Thompson, Ali Whitton's songs of struggle, hope, rootlessness and giving over to abandon will charm you, unsettle you a bit, and make you laugh at your own shared humanity. Everyone always mentions he opened for Ed Sheeran's series of big stadium gigs in Auckland, there was a time when Ed Sheeran used to open for him in the UK. If you've never heard LOST BiRD, well, prepare to fall in love with some songs.

About: The Dauphin of Mississippi
Raised into a family of Gospel singers in the wilds of southern Mississippi. Audiences and critics have compared his songs to John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt, and Guy Clark. His first album, (2017's self-produced Prodigal Songs for the End of Days) was a furious genre bending romp through an America collapsing under late stage capitalism, netting him WyCMA nods for Album, Songwriter, and Americana group of the year. His 2019 release, The Book of Vanities, recorded at Ivy Hall Studios in Nashville, featured the likes of 14-time Grammy winner Dan Tyminski on fiddle, living Bluegrass meme Tony Wray on banjo and guitar, and Smith Curry on pedal steel. To paraphrase Jamie MacPhail, what you get is an organic collision of the American vernaculars of the deep south and mountain west, Depression-era country and modern unbounded songwriting you're unlikely to experience anywhere.

“One of those relaxed country voices that needs to be heard...a fine songwriter....melodic foot-tapping country music delight....several quality ballads...Buy this Album. 4.5/5 Stars” —Paul Riley, Country Music People Magazine (U.K.)

Treat yourself to an evening with a man who will most definitely entertain you. He'll make you laugh, he'll take you deep,.... and remind you that you have a soul. Jamie MacPhail, Sitting Room Sessions, Hawkes Bay, NZ

Brilliant Classic Country. Dave Watkins, The Country Mile radio show(U.K.)

Plays a mean guitar and sings songs and tells tales that’ll have y’all laughing, crying, and all points in between! .... his songs are hugely literate and intensely melodic. But for that one lucky roll of the dice, he’d be known far and wide. Rob Habers, Ambient Light, Auckland NZ

After listening to the Book of Vanities for a month or so, I just love it. It's a top 5 Americana album of the year. Jason's voice reminds me of John Martyn , who I just love. So, check him out. Shady, The Americana Show on Radioactive 88.6 FM, Welington, NZ

“Dauphin, Jason Burge. Great, great songwriter. Quite an ability to draw in listeners with narratives in the songwriting. Beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous.” Grady Kirkpatrick, Wyoming Public Radio

Where has this guys writing been my whole life? Cracking tales delivered beautifully. Darren Watson, NZ Blues Legend

Like the love child of Ted Hawkins and Bonnie Raitt. Delivered by Townes Van Zandt passing through on a train. Brad Watson (novelist Ms. Jane, The Heaven of Mercury)

(The songwriting) is enough to make you put your beer down and take in the moment. Mike Morris, Fridays in the Asher
