Partitions & Resonances present a listening series of compositions by Wandelweiser and related composers/artists/sound artists at Audio Foundation. Curated by composer-performer Johnny Chang, the series aims to re-focus the action of listening in the context of the performance space and will take place on the last Saturday of each month.

Johnny has been a part of the Wandelweiser composers collective since 2012 and in 2018, initiated a new framework for the presentation of creative research and performances, “Partitions & Resonances”, aimed at encouraging new and ongoing collaborations between the varied disciplines of composition, musicology, historical research and performance. He currently collaborates with: Antoine Beuger, Samuel Dunscombe, Catherine Lamb, Klaus Lang, Mike Majkowski, Phill Niblock, Derek Shirley, Germaine Sijstermans, Taku Sugimoto, Eric Wong.

As composer and performer, his articulated performances have been featured in: Staatsoper/ OperaLab//DAAD Mikromusik/MaerzMusik (Berlin), Donaueschingen Musiktage, DNK Days/Sonic Acts Festival/Muziekgebouw (Amsterdam), Gaudeamus (Utrecht), Insub.Festival/cave12 (Geneva), Cafe OTO (London), Moment Musicaux (Aarau), Dampfzentrale (Bern), Q-O2 workspace (Brussels), Wandelweiser Klangraum (Düsseldorf), Klang im Turm (Munich), Minimal Jukebox (Los Angeles Philharmonic), Pardon To Tu (Warsaw), Umlaut Festival (Berlin & Paris), Audio Foundation (NZ) to various music series/venues in Berlin such as Staatsoper unter den Linden, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, KINDL Centre for contemporary art, ausland, Labor Sonor, Sophiensaele, KM28.

EVA-MARIA HOUBEN
Eva-Maria Houben (born 1955) studied Music Education at Folkwang-Musikhochschule Essen and the organ with Gisbert Schneider. Following her exams she taught both German and Music Education at Secondary School. She received her doctorate and postdoctoral lecturing qualification in musicology and was called for lectures at Gerhard-Mercator-Universität Duisburg and Robert-Schumann-Hochschule Düsseldorf. Since 1993 Professor Houben has been lecturing at Dortmund University`s “Institut für Musik und Musikwissenschaft”, with both music theory and contemporary music as her focus. Up to now many books were published, concerning contemporary music, contemporary composers and traditional music, listened to with ‘new ears’.
Eva-Maria Houben has been performing works for the organ for more than 30 years. As she is related to the “wandelweiser-group” of composers, her compositions are published by “edition wandelweiser”, Haan. Her list of compositions up to now includes works for the organ, piano, clarinet, trombone, violoncello and other solo instruments, works for voice and piano, for wind and chamber ensembles, for orchestra and for voice and orchestra, works for choir (www.wandelweiser.de). She publishes on subjects of contemporary music (Steiner, Stuttgart; PFAU, Saarbrücken; Edition Howeg, Zürich; bis-label, Oldenburg; Edition Wandelweiser, Haan; transcript, Bielefeld).

SIMON ALLEN
Simon Allen is a UK composer / percussionist known as a free improviser and interpreter of experimental music, often playing self-made resources. His compositions explore text, photography and traditional notation combined, to communicate with other artists; recent pieces Map Fragments [2019] Aerosol (after Cornell) [2019] and Empty Air Thickens [2017] variously incorporate film and British sign language. His multi-media work Resonance At The Still Point Of Change [2012] for instruments, voices, multi-screen projection and lights was commissioned for the Cultural Olympiad. Simon has a long association with John Tilbury playing Feldman and can be heard playing in the ensembles Apartment House, Skogen and Ensemble Grizzana amongst others on Another Timbre, Matchless, ATOPOS, Naim Audio, Sibarecords, Tall Guy Records & EMI.
