In addition to 15-plus fiddle-players, the ensemble also boasts cellists, small-pipes, piano, accordion, flute, irish bouzouki and guitar, Although playing by ear and from memory is encouraged, most players are readers and use written music.
The Dunedin Scottish Fiddle Orchestra makes public appearances for community events and the like, and for concerts and dances. Core players are occasionally recruited to the Dunedin Ceilidh Orchestra (complete with dance caller) for barndances and ceilidhs.
The Dunedin Scottish Fiddle Orchestra meets every Wednesday and welcomes new members.Their Facebook page declares - Bring your fiddle/cello and play tunes from Scotland, Ireland and beyond. On a good day we sound like Riverdance.
