Becoming Dragon: a Jazz Journey, Wellington Jazz Festival, Wharewaka Events Centre
12 June at 12 Noon 2021 (90 minutes)

Question: What do you get when you add one internationally-acclaimed psychologist, author, playwright, presenter (Dr Frances Steinberg) to four amazing jazz musicians (Ben Wilcock, piano; John Rae, drums; Patrick Bleakley, bass; Dan Yeabsley, sax)?

Answer: An Old Dragon doing New Tricks to Cool Licks.

Part TED talk, part personal storytelling, Becoming Dragon: a Jazz Journey is a 90 minute musical/theatrical/multimedia-spangled event. Dr Frances Steinberg imparts wisdom from her seven decades of pursuing a Life on the Way, interweaving pearls from psychology, martial arts, and philosophy while the Jelly Rolls play their riffs. Pogroms, gangsters, chemical f-bombs, macumba, and unbendable arms harmonise with klezmer, ragtime, blues, bossa nova, and swing, culminating in a plea for us all to become New-dists!

The event truly sparkles because of the prodigious talent on show. Well known for her provocative humorous keynote speeches, Frances Steinberg spent the majority of her professional life as a psychologist, martial artist, acupuncturist, interactive learning designer, international presenter, and author of more than 12 professional books, 3 novels, 7 online guides, and 4 plays (one of which was shortlisted for the Adam NZ Play Award).

The Jelly Rolls Quartet features some of New Zealand’s legendary jazz performers. Ben Wilcock, pianist and composer, was the 'on stage pianist' in the award winning show The Pickle King (Indian ink) and has performed at Glastonbury, Java Jazz, Sydney Arts Festival and New York's Ella lounge and Rockwood Music Hall. John Rae, Scottish-born NZ-drum legend recorded his first album at the age of and has subsequently recorded over 30 albums as a leader and side man. John has become a much beloved larger than life figure within the Wellington jazz scene, particularly as the front man for The Troubles. Patrick Bleakley has been one of the most sought after bass players in New Zealand since the 1970s. His baptism of fire came through meeting iconic musician and actor Bruno Lawrence who soon inducted Bleakley into his band Blerta. Dan Yeabsley is a multi-instrumentalist who regularly plays with: The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, Fat Freddie’s Drop, The Troubles, and Twinset (with twin brother Chris.)
