Jock, Mitch and friends
Sunday, August 15, 2021
Starts 7:30 pm
Jock (Peter) Walton and Mitch (Iain) Mitchell
Jock writes:-
“He’s the singer and guitarist, I am the box (accordion) player. We have been playing together since 2016 and discovered that we know many of the same tunes and songs.
I arrived in Dunedin in 1975 and was instrumental in getting The New Edinburgh Folk club started as well as helping with the first Whare flat Festival. The bush band I started got many people interested in Celtic Music. I ran a Scottish radio programme on 4XD for a while and had the privilege of interviewing Dougie McLean.
I have played in many Scottish and Irish bands in Dunedin over the years.
On the night expect a mix of Scottish, Blues, and Old timey music, with a few interesting guests thrown in. We both tend to tell Jokes and silly stories as we go along so the crack promises to be good.”
Mitch writes:-
I’ve been singing British Celtic music semi-professionally since I was 13. Metro Magazine once pronounced my voice as “as strong as a Scottish gale” which I’ve always taken as a compliment! I’ve played in many venues and festivals in both the South and North Islands, some more than once!”
Mitch is an established traditional singer, with a wide knowledge of the music’s roots reflected in his eclectic personal repertoire of shanties and Scottish songs of love and work plus some Mississippi Delta and Chicago Acoustic Blues.
Jock and I have been playing together for around four years in clubs, dances and busking venues. We argue all the time but it
seems to work!”
