Enjoy a late night at City Gallery Wellington with Tuatara Open Late. The Gallery comes alive with art, music, film, talks with beer, wine, and food to keep you going.
Begin your evening getting to know the art and artists that make up Matarau with a tour of the exhibition. Next, join artist Ming Ranginui in conversation with curator Moya Lawson as they look under the hood of her work Angel numbers on the dash, a pimped out Daihatsu Sirion, showing now as part of Matarau. Later, invited artists will respond to the works of Glen Hayward and his reconsideration of familiar objects - talking to their own practice, these Artists discuss why they too find the commonplace so compelling. To close the evening, sonic artists Thomas Carroll and Rob Tyler (Urn) will transcend what you know about making music, with their response to the themes of Matarau. Together the pair incorporate rongoā plants as a modulation source, to create works inspired by māori philosophy, cosmology and experimental noise music.
Throughout the evening our drop-in drawing workshop will be running, for you to take a moment to study and sketch everyday objects, exploring the mysticism of the mundane.
As always, our bar and galleries open at 5pm, there will be Tuatara beers, Seresin Estate wine, supper treats and sounds from a Radio Active DJ.
