For the unacquainted, Modern Hypnosis is a Naarm based record label who have been at the forefront of dub inspired club music in the Southern Hemisphere for some time now. Fronted by the boss man Scott aka Storm’n Norm, he has put in tireless hours to build one of the finest labels we know of with a very high bar for quality of releases. The label can’t be shoe holed into a genre, more so an ethos – dub inspired, sound system focused music for the dance floor.
Pugilist is a notable name of many UK flavored subgenres you should be familiar with. Originally from Scotland, Alex spent much time in New Zealand before finally settling down in Naarm, where he lives today. With an approach to production that blends so beautifully with the ethos of Modern Hypnosis, it's evident why he is a frequent name being pressed on the label; He’s also released on powerhouses such as Martyn’s 3024 and Mantra/Double’s Rupture. Pugilist’s tunes are plentiful and varied, yet they almost all hold true to the overarching dub inspiration whether he be making Jungle, Dubstep, Dub Techno or other adjacent genres. Often fusing elements from the aforementioned genres together in his productions and DJ sets, Alex’s set is one not to miss.
Next up, we’re excited to be hosting someone who’s been on our radar for a long time... Akcept (Ngāti Porou/Tūhoe) is an Ōtautahi based producer and DJ specializing in Dub and adjacent genres. Alex has been making excellent tunes for longer than some of you reading have even been allowed in our shows, evident in his caliber of output. Having released with distinguished labels like Juan Forte, Sentry Records, The Moth Club, and Modern Hypnosis to name a few, Akcept is truly a sensational producer and equally taloned DJ – watch his recent Keep Hush set for a taster. We can’t wait to host both these Alex’s!
On support, we have Modern Hypnosis label boss Storm’n Norm along with Waea G B2B Yung Gho$t. Norm aka Scott, has a bag full of all the forthcoming MH goodies along with some of the finest dubs in the game, so his set will be one you don’t want to miss. Last but certainly not least is Gho$t and Waea G. To most in Welly, you already know these two so get ready for the energy that they bring! It’s a mad one to have Cas on the decks instead of the mic for once.
This will be an epic night of proper bass music ranging from Dub techno to Dubstep, breaks to Jungle - this night is all encompassing. The lineup is beyond stacked and we even have extended hour and a half sets in store for each of our artists, so we can really get in the groove with them. We can’t wait to party with you soon x
