The Blithenian Mysteries play mostly original music with an emphasis on improvisation. This is our second gig, we recently performed in support of the book release for Future Jaw Clap at The Pyramid Club in Wellington (sharing the bill with Greg Malcolm).
The five members of Blithenian Mysteries are:
Stuart Porter, (saxophones) is a founding member of the Primitive Art Group and Braille Collective, a seminal Wellington ensemble known for its improvisational approach to music. Since then Porter has performed with many groups including The Garbage & The Flowers, and The Builders.
Susan Ellis (piano, trumpet, cello) also from the Wellington alternative music scene of the 1980s and played in a number of influential bands like The Spies, The And Band and The Puddle as well as composing her own songs.
Brendon Ryniker (Guitar) also involved in the Wellington music scene from the 1980s Brendon was also in Wart (Flying None 1992). He and Stuart formed God and Tongue together - touring to Dunedin with Tongue in the1990s.
Chris Sargeant (drums) also has a background in improvisation and theatre with Prometheus and Theatrical Explosions. Chris is a former member of Ambulant and is currently playing drums for Dougie and the Moonrocks .
Matt Sanson, (Bass), a regular performer at the Steiner School Fair, began playing improvised music at None Gallery (Otepoti Artist Gallery and Residence). He has played music for dance pieces with the Aha Dance Collective, GASP, other performing arts groups and bass for bands like Dougie and The Moonrocks, Swingbridge (Fringe 2024), Reid + Wolken + Sanson, and Samurai Cowboys (his duo with Motoko Kikkawa).
