The lush green lands of Galatea, hidden turf, bush, forest & terrain in the Bay of Plenty. Rolling plains. Majestic mountain ranges. A locale fitting for an event of note. Locals Gerrard & Rory conjured a plan. Weary of travelling north to the big smoke of Tamaki Makaurau for the killer rock & roll gigs, the scheme was hatched, bring those acts worthy of the effort, to the pastoral jewel in the crown, that is Galatea. Whack a handle on this idea of a festival, something eccentric & easy to remember, ergo “GRRUNK”!
Start mustering a bevy of acts to populate the bill for this Fest. A cabal of riffage, swing, attitude, aesthetic, entertainment that ain’t cut from the usual cloth.
JORDAN LUCK - Get ready to warm up those lungs and practice throwing your hands in the air.
DELANEY DAVIDSON, along with his haunting orchestra. Delaney’s award-winning songwriting has been celebrated by the likes of Willie Nelson, Marlon Williams, and Tami Neilson, and his spellbinding magic will cast a vibe over all of Galatea.
PIECES of MOLLY cranking the dial way past 11, we’ve got Christchurch’s hardest and rockin’est.
ARTHUR AHBEEZ and his Hot Burrito Boys - Feast your ears on the psychedelic genius. It’s gonna get weird—in the best way possible.
HOT MACHINE, femme fatale gang hooked into a Runaways/Thin Lizzy/AC/DC aesthetic. Melburnian maestras of hard rock groove. Hot yet cool, sensual & sassy. No brainer. Book ‘em Danno.
Local input. Southern folk. Folk by name & by musical nature. That be the more than a dozen year institution that be THE EASTERN. Helmed by charismatic mainstay Adam McGrath, it’s a car crash ‘tween the Pogues & Steve Earle. Self monikered country mongrels, there’s dashes, drams & doses of folk, blues, Irish, Appalachian & Springsteen, but brewed & bottled in the garden city of Ōtautahi.
And more action from thee Southern NZ region. Young uns but with a good chunk of years marinating styles, there’s fellow Ōtautahi twang tearaways, ADAM HATTAWAY & THE HAUNTERS. Tongue in cheek, Dylan dipped, trad tinged, black humoured, noir strained. Laid back countrified melodic rock&roll. Easy on the ear, hook worms a-plenty.
More local content. From Central Otago comes MADS HARROP. Channelling her daily challenges of autism & tourettes, Mads throws all her life experiences into a melodic indie alternative blender & comes up with chunks of the Breeders, Liz Phair, & Look Blue Go Purple. Layer upon layer of dreamy, fuzzy pop hooks.
CCTV, indie post punk eccentric teen energy garage snot gang. Early Black Flag meets Ween?? Stew of weird brews. Off the wall daily grind lyrics, indie strange guitar & keys, solid rhythm section, hyper frontman w/contagious energy. The new century's Toy Love?
More to come. Keep yr peepers peeled & yr ear flaps attuned to & for further details. This will be a singularly unforgettable day long ramble of local hospitality, wrangled together in a stunning setting, peppered with the unique nature of Galatean civility, a collective of upbeat, good time, heavy hitting rock & roll ensembles, a beer can museum of global notoriety, & the guiding hands of local ledges Gerrard & Rory. Let this opportunity drift? FOMO? Big time..
