Peanut Butter Wolf, J Rocc + More Heading To NZ For Stones Throw Records Anniversary Show

The good folk at Red Bull Sound Select are throwing a massive party next month to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Californian independent hip hop label Stones Throw Records. Launched in 1996 by Peanut Butter Wolf to release his debut album with the late MC Charizma (who was tragically murdered in 1993), Stones Throw has grown to an internationally recognised label representing a multitude of acts including the likes of Aloe Blacc, Dudley Perkins, Guilty Simpson, Homeboy Sandman, J Dilla, Madlib, Knxwledge, and Mayer Hawthorne.

The September show will be joined by Stones Throw acts Peanut Butter Wolf, J Rocc, MNDSGN Egyptian Lover, and Jonti as well as will showcasing performances from a massive line-up of local Red Bull Sound Select artists handpicked by curators - Eno X Dirty, HIGH HOOPS, Kakapo, and Villette. Here are the details....

On Saturday the 10th of September, Red Bull Sound Select curators Young, Gifted & Broke, Madcap, HIT + RUN, and A Label Called Success combine to present the New Zealand Stones Throw Records 20th Anniversary Show at Studio The Venue on Auckland's Karangahape Road. The event looks set to be the biggest show since the Red Bull Sound Select Block Party in June 2014.

Headlined by Stones Throw acts Peanut Butter Wolf, J Rocc, MNDSGN Egyptian Lover, and Jonti this very special wildcard event will also showcase performances from a massive line-up of local Red Bull Sound Select artists handpicked by all curators - Eno X Dirty, HIGH HOOPS, Kakapo, and Villette. And to take things to a grander level, all of this will be followed by an H+R Kick On after-party featuring Affsid Kidjhagiffy, Buska Dimes, and Christoph El Truento.

For two decades now, Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw Records has been a fearless musical advocate for J-Dilla, Madlib, Snoop Dogg 7 Days of Funk, Aloe Blacc, Dam-Funk, Georgia Anne Muldrow, MF-Doom, Mayer Hawthorne, Quasimoto and countless others. Along the way, they've helped consistently reshape and reinvigorate the sound of beats, hip-hop, soul and psychedelica from their hometown of Los Angeles to the world, and inspired the likes of Flying Lotus early in their careers in the process. Coming off the back of recent releases from Homeboy Sandman, Mild High Club, Samiyam, and Tuxedo, 2016 finds Stones Throw Records as creatively vital as they've ever been.

"Stones Throw has got to be one of the most influential labels of our generation," explains YGB curator Tom Scott. "It's the label we've all always dreamed of being signed to, and where we've always looked for what's next. From Doom to Madlib, to Aloe Blacc to Dudley Perkins, to Mayer Hawthrone, everything they've put out has always been high quality. They're always innovative, and they never come with something the same as the last release. This show coming to New Zealand is a huge deal for me."

Fittingly, for many of the Red Bull Sound Select artists playing at the show, Stones Throw Records and its sprawling artist roster have long provided artistic inspiration as they develop their music and practice. "Stones Throw Records were a hugely influential label for me growing up," reflects A Label Called Success artist High Hoops. "In twenty years, what they've done as an avenue for progressive and forward-thinking hip-hop and electronic music is impressive. It always seemed like they never got caught up in the hype of one-hit-wonders or quick-road-to-success releases. Everything has always felt honest, considered and innovative, which is why you can bet the team that they've assembled for this show will be exactly that.
