EMA Shares Slow-Burning New Single 'Stand With You (Song for Ghostship)'

Wednesday 15th March, 2017 3:05PM

It's been awhile since we've heard from Erika M Anderson, aka EMA, but the American artist has just emerged with her new single 'Stand By You'. The stripped back cut has been released as part of Our First 100 Days anti-Trump compilation, but also pays tribute to those lost in the tragic fire at Oakland DIY space Ghost Ship late last year. In a statement Anderson explained why she wrote the song...

"so last december ghostship burned down and i lost my damn mind. i don’t even know why it affected me so much but it did. i was a wreck for days. i cried a lot and posted crazy things on fb, where my feed was filled with bay area friends mourning and/or trying to figure out if ppl in their community were safe. i hadn’t lived there for years but it made me realize how important that community had been to me — i knew the person throwing the show (not the douche landlord) who used to come to shows at our venue in west oakland, i knew the performers, i knew a few who didn’t make it out. it was partially the timing, right after the election which was like getting spit on in the face."

Along with releasing the track, EMA has also let slip that she is putting the finishing touches on the follow-up album to her excellent 2014 offering The Future's Void. The as-yet-untitled record is tipped to sound like early EMA material and was produced by Unknown Mortal Orchestra bassist Jake Portrait. However, the new record will see Anderson releasing via City Slang, after publicly stating her former label won't be involved. "Matador won’t be putting it out. It’s too political (which I think especially now music SHOULD be) and the sound is not exactly mainstream". Matador replied that they never discouraged Anderson from making a political record, but the choice came down to rostering decisions.
