Premiere: Bright Music Share Self-Titled Debut Album

Friday 4th May, 2018 11:49AM

Wellington electronic duo Bright Music (Nik Brinkman of Physical and Bevan Smith of Introverted Dancefloor) charged into last summer with a winning trifecta of ear-tickling tunes, wizarding up a fizzy dance-pop sound ideal for pool parties and beachside cocktail sipping. As we move into the cooler months the group have dropped their self-titled debut collection beamed in from an imaginary tropical paradise. The duo's collaboration was kicked off via their participation in the Ghostwriter’s Collective programme, while the official story behind the record spins a slightly more fantastical tale, stating "In 2010, Nik and Bevan were traveling to the the US to record some new music. Unfortunately, due to bad weather conditions, the flight was diverted to a small island they dubbed ‘Cocorone’. Nik and Bevan were left stranded on this small island for a week... they walked around the island with laptops and a microphone recording the vibrant local life. They decided to make an album incorporating the sounds they had captured of the ocean, wildlife, buskers, street markets, and even children's birthday parties."

Bright Music are planning what's sure to be a super fun release party at the end of this month in Wellington (venue to be announced), promising limbo dancing, surprise gifts and more. We tracked down the duo for the lowdown on their debut collection, let the sunny tunes wash over you via the Youtube stream below and read Nik Brinkman's words on the record...

"This album was heavily influence by The Cure's 'Mixed Up' album and UB40 tracks. We made the album using only one Roland drum machine from the mid 80's, and that was our time keeper for the whole record. We tried to stay off the computer grid, so things get wonky now and then. We wanted to do something quick and very fun, and we are super happy with the feel we captured for this record, and the weird adventure it takes you on."
