Sulfate Announces Self-Titled Debut Album + Shares Single 'Bush'

Wax Chattels frontman Peter Ruddell unveiled his first single as Sulfate 'Speaking For Others' in early July, a thunderingly raw yet dreamy statement of intent which was complimented by a whirlwind North Island tour, wrapping up this Saturday at Tāmaki Makaurau's Whammy Bar. Ruddell is keeping the ball rolling with second single 'Bush', and has revealed Sulfate's self-titled debut album will be releasing in mid-September via the champs at local independent imprint Prison Tapes. Featuring Hariet Ellis (Na Noise, Vincent HL, Bozo), 'Bush' conveys a focussed sonic intensity complemented by almost crooning tag-team vocals, inspired by the overwhelming sensory onslaught of Ruddell's recent overseas touring experiences.

"Growing up we had a family home in the hills north of Matakana (back when it was just a hardware store and a pub), with this expanse of bush leading away from the section down the hill. When I was about 6-7 I remember going exploring around here and very quickly getting very lost and panicking. I thought this was a nice analogy for the experience of touring - being exhausted, unable to find a way of making sense of what’s happening, overwhelming wanting to be back in your own bed, and despite all efforts being unable to see the beauty that’s around you."

Sulfate's forthcoming album was originally conceived in the downtime while Ruddell was touring the States with Wax Chattels, described as "a record about New Zealand from a distance." Written, recorded and mixed by Ruddell, vinyl editions will continue the DIY spirit with cover artwork woodcut prints created by the artist himself. Experience Sulfate live this weekend with milk, Bad Timing and Oscar Dowling, and at next Friday's The Others Way festival...
