Listen: We Are Temporary - I Can't Breathe
Darkwave artist We Are Temporary, aka ex-pat Mark Roberts, has written new track 'I Cant Breathe' in memory of Eric Garner, the black man who died in a chokehold administered by an NYPD officer. Roberts was compelled to craft the song after viewing the tape of Garners' death and the five-and-a-half-minute-long result employs a series of recordings pertinent to the event, including some of Garner's last words. The Brooklyn-based musician told the Village Voice, where the eerie track premiered, that there is a certain manipulation behind the song, adding: "I'm aware of the fact that Garner's life and the situation might be more complex than the video shows, but I think what I wanted to do is allow the music to create empathy for a person who was dying".
