Tour Information
Pyramid Club is proud to present Pūoro Tū, a festival of adventures in Māori instruments and sound. Bringing together many of Aotearoa's leading and emerging voices in taonga pūoro (traditional Māori musical instruments), the festival is a celebration of this tradition and a forum to forge new pathways with ancient knowledge and taonga.

Because of Covid restrictions, many events will be taking place offsite from Pyramid Club. If we need to adapt the programme due to changing Covid alert levels, these will be posted through Pyramid Club's facebook page and website www.pyramidclub.org.nz

Rāhoroi – Saturday 20/11
3pm @ Futuna Chapel, Karori [Limited to 60 tickets]

Riki Pirihi conducts taonga pūoro ensemble

Riki Pirihi (Ngāi Tāhuhu, Ngāti Mahanga, Patuharakeke) began his career as a founding member of seminal band Trinity Roots. He has since lent his drumming and production talents to legendary New Zealand artists claiming his position as one of New Zealand’s finest and in demand musicians. These artists include Jonathan Crayford, Bic Runga, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Ladi6, Recloose, Crowded House, Electric Wire Hustle, Leila Adu, Lord Echo, Orchestra of Spheres, Fabulous Arabia, The Phoenix Foundation and many more. Riki is also the brains behind the massive Eru Dangerspiel Ensemble and a solo artist under the moniker Cave Circles.

Recently Riki has been developing a personal approach to conduction, a spontaneous composition practice that was developed by the great musical mind, Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris. Riki’s conduction concepts stem from the movements, sounds and philosophies of Te Ao Māori, free improvisation and sonic arts. A series of hand gestures and signs symbolise musical notation and it is up to the players to interpret these directions, calling on their musical expertise and intelligence to create the music before your very eyes/ears.

This performance is designed specifically for a mass ensemble of taonga pūoro players, featuring Mahina Kingi-Kaui, Thomas Carroll, Jerome Kavanagh, Ruby Solly, Ricky Prebble, Tamihana Kātene, Te Kahureremoa Taumata, Khali Meari Mataroa, Elise Goodge, Sam Palmer, Shane James, James Webster, Kerian Varaine and Alistair Fraser.
