Equinox is a collective comprising four of Auckland’s most experienced musicians.
Originally formed in the mid 90s under the nominal leadership of drummer Barry Young, the group has consistently presented a quality repertoire of classic jazz standards and original compositions. The members of the current line-up have all played together previously in other groups and are now combining their talents to produce a refreshing new ensemble sound.
Guitarist Andy Smith has moved to the forefront of the Auckland jazz scene in recent years. He has a Masters degree from the Massey Jazz School and lists his favourite players as Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny and John Scofield.
Trumpeter Mike Booth has vast overseas experience from living and working in Europe for the past 20 years. He is now in top demand as a lead trumpeter, soloist, recording artist and teacher.
Bassist Aaron Coddel has played internationally with singers Cleo Laine and Mark Murphy, saxophonist George Coleman and is a first-call musician for concerts, stage productions and recording sessions in all styles.
Drummer Barry Young has played professionally in Auckland for over 30 years. During that time he has backed overseas artists (Mike Nock, Bill Cunliffe, Bruce Forman), made numerous Jazz Festival appearances (Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Bangkok, Norfolk Island) and played on the award winning jazz album (Perfect Strangers) with the George Chisholm Quintet.
