Creative Jazz Club Launch Party
@1885, Britomart
Wed 27 October at 8pm – Free entry

featuring
Roger Manins’ Hip Flask
with James Muller (AUS)
The Creative Jazz Club launches its new season from its new home, 1885, and invites you to join them for a night to remember with the sexy, funky, jazz-inspired blues of Roger Manins’ Hip Flask. They will be augmented by renowned Australian jazz guitarist James Muller, who has been described as a “mountain of guitar virtuosity’.

” Manins cuts raw energy as he bulldozes, soars, honks and cascades through a blissful set of original tunes”

The line-up:
Roger Manins – tenor saxophone James Muller - lead guitar
Lance Su’a – rhythm guitar Ben Turua – bass
Ron Samson - drums

This promises to be a fantastic night which sees Roger and James reignite their musical flame!

CJC are now moving their weekly Wednesday jazz sessions from Ponsonby to 1885, Britomart, having outgrown their previous venue.

James Muller, from Adelaide, South Australia has been playing guitar since the age of 16 and he has played with the cream of Adelaide and Sydney’s jazz artists, becoming one of the most in-demand guitarists in the country. The second of his four albums All Out won an ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album in 2000, and the third Thrum, (which features Roger Manins), was nominated for the same award in 2002. In 2000 James was co-winner of the National Jazz Awards held at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival and in 2001 won two Mo awards for best jazz instrumentalist and best jazz group.

James recently won an APRA award for the most performed jazz work in 2003, and also won the 2004 Freedman Fellowship (Jazz). As well as performing nationally in Australia, James has successfully toured Europe.

The bold and beautiful saxophone of Roger Manins will be at the helm of his group Hip Flask, also the name of his first NZ release in 2005 - toted as one of the coolest New Zealand albums of the decade. Manins based himself in Sydney for most of his musical career and came to prominence performing with the vanguard of Australian jazz. He left for New York in 1996 for several years before returning to emerge as a powerhouse in the ebullient Australian scene, scooping the Australian International Jazz Awards Title (saxophone) in 2002 at Wangaratta. Manins, now based in Auckland, has played on over 25 recordings.
2010 has seen the release of two of his personal albums: Trio (Rattle Records), Latitude
(Rufus Records featuring Bernie McGann).

Roger Manins is artistic director and co-founder of the Creative Jazz Club Aotearoa, and a lecturer in Jazz studies at the University of Auckland.
