MUSIC PERFORMANCE - YEBIISU

Check out thundering tribal drums, growly bass riffs and majestic horns lines NOON each day of the expo next to the wrestling area.

Having shared the stage with many top local bands including Che Fu, Unity Pacific, Roy G & the Bivinators, Roofdog, Unknown Peace, The Managers and Atsushi & the Moisties, this group of dub-hoppers are an elemental force to be reckoned with. Combining reggae, funk, ska, rock, and dub influences and bringing some of Auckland’s most promising young jazz-school graduates together onstage has seen the band pack out shows at local venues in the last 12 months.

Now, in 2010 this 8 piece band are taking their music to the world, starting with their first release, West Coast. The song was mixed by Stu Bainbridge and mastered by Chris Chetland from Kog. The music reflects upon the lives, experiences and dreams of the band members and their home, the beautiful Waitakere Ranges of West Auckland. Yebiisu’s debut EP Piha was recently featured on radio stations like Base FM, George FM, Kiwi FM, (CD of the Week, and Top 10 Hit Pick, as well as in-studio live performance), Auckland’s 95bFM, and Dunedin’s Radio One 91FM.

Yebiisu’s mild-mannered frontman Jayme Wallace is often compared to some of reggae’s greatest voices, and is equally splendid on soulful ballads as he is belting out James Brown’s ‘I Feel Good!’, while chief songwriters Sims Ross and James Bristow have a list of influences as long as their fanbase. Probably the most exciting thing about witnessing Yebiisu live is the diverse multi-instrumentation involved – Brazilian native Herb de Souza regularly adds an array of ethnic percussion layers over the top, whilst trombonist Jonothan Tan will frequently pull out a conch shell mid-set to blow an eerie refrain unlike anything you’ve heard before. Then there’s the squelching, dramatic basslines and synthesized delay phrases typical of the dub genre, and delicate melodica lines peppering the songs, to add a little something different.

The outlook for the next few months sees the band head back into the studio to record an album, as well as a busy schedule of live shows such the outdoor Waitakere Sounds festival in February, the Raglan Yot Club in early October, and various other club and festival dates (check the MySpace for more details!)
