REAL GROOVY TO CELEBRATE RECORD STORE DAY 2013 on Saturday 20th April

Real Groovy – New Zealand ’s foremost record store for over thirty years – again celebrates Record Store Day with in-store performances, exclusive local and international vinyl releases, guest DJs and other activities.

Doors open at 9am and customers will be queuing for:

UNIQUE LOCAL RELEASES:

WAVES – their 1975 masterpiece Waves is being reissued on vinyl and – ON RECORD STORE DAY ONLY – it comes with the double CD package of two Waves albums – the reissue of the original album, plus the never-been-released follow-up album Misfit from 1977. This is only available from Real Groovy. The CD set will also be available separately.

BEASTWARS - will celebrate the release of their much anticipated 2nd album Blood Becomes Fire, with Real Groovy exclusively offering a limited number of 100 on Blood Red Vinyl.

Both acts will play short sets in-store on Record Store Day – Waves at 2pm; Beastwars at 4pm

SHIHAD’s debut album Churn finally makes it to 12inch vinyl. Their 1993 Jaz Coleman produced album is a firm favourite with fans and Real Groovy will be selling copies of the limited edition run. Shihad will be opening for Black Sabbath that night.

INTERNATIONAL VINYL RELEASES. As usual Real Groovy will be obtaining as many of the plethora of Record Store Day releases as we can get our hands on. All will be in strictly limited quantities to INSTORE CUSTOMERS ONLY. No presales, no web sales, no mail order, no holds. Fans need to be there!

GUEST DJs: a strong line up of local record hounds will spin records from indie sounds, to murky metal to yacht rock – a line up of guests that include Labour’s Jacinda Ardern; Northern Soul DJ extraordinaire Nettie Page; Angela from Under The Radar; Pennie Black from bFM; Tova O’Brien from TV3; Liam Dann from the NZ Herald; Helene Ravlich from Ms Helene.com; Laura Barton from Madman; and local identity and record expert Simon Grigg will be amongst a number of DJs spinning the platters that matter.

FACE PAINTING – bring all those budding Gene Simmons and Alice Coopers for FREE Face Painting – from 9am.

REAL GROOVY has been an independent New Zealand Record Store since 1981. At 438 Queen St for almost 25 of those years, it’s a destination for New Zealanders and international music fans alike.

In the past year or so we’ve hosted instore performances by Billy Bragg, Guitar Wolf, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the Rackets – with Chris Knox guesting – and Sal Valentine & the Baby Shakes, among others – and featured the premiere of a film of a unique White Stripes performance.

Dropping in to say hi recently , and to do a bit of shopping, were Morrissey, John Cooper Clarke, Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, Keith Morris & Henry Rollins from Black Flag, Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke, Lenny Henry and, a couple of weeks ago, Rodriguez.

Real Groovy was founded in 1981 and is staffed by music fans for music fans. Corporate free and proudly New Zealand Owned, it’s a world class quarter-acre vinyl junkies’ paradise with the best selection of recorded music in the southern hemisphere. Uniquely, Real Groovy allows customers to trade their unwanted discs – LPs, CDs and DVDs – so that they can keep the collections fresh and growing.

VINYL RECORDS are undergoing a huge revival as music lovers seek the best sound quality for their favourite recordings. Most quality new releases are available on vinyl and favourite classics are constantly being reissued to meet the demand. Pressing plants around the world are running 24/7 to keep up. Young and old alike are experiencing the joy of finding those rarities and classics in Real Groovy’s vast selection because they’ve experienced and are embracing the tried-and-true technology that delivers a warmth that digital lacks. Clear highs and a tight bottom end, human-scale cover art, and the ritual of spinning a disc turn the everyday into a magical musical experience.

RECORD STORE DAY is in its fifth year and again thousands of record stores worldwide will be celebrating their unique culture on Saturday April 20th . 9am-9pm. More info at www.realgroovy.co.nz.
