Gig Information

The Broken Heartbreakers play their first headline show since arriving back in NZ to their new home town of Dunedin after a few years of overseas adventure.

Will there be new songs filled with melancholy and a political tinge'
Very likely...
Will there be tables and chairs and candlelight to mask the stray tear'
Almost definitely...
Have they finally settled down'
Probably not...

With support from Mavis Gary.
Mavis Gary is the solo moniker of Adrian Ng also of Trick Mammoth.

The song-writing core duo of John Guy Howell and Rachel Bailey have been making music together as The Broken Heartbreakers for over 10 years.

This intimate show will see the duo perform songs, new and old, from their deep well of material. They will also be joined by Stix Orbell on drums for the finale set of tunes.

The Broken Heartbreakers' music mixes the bleak with the beautiful. Tales of love and loss drawing on deep roots of country, folk and classic pop melody, but with a defiant and subversive twist and just a touch of modern electricity. They have toured extensively around New Zealand and abroad, playing community halls, art galleries, living rooms, dive bars and town halls, charming audiences with their rich harmonies and warm instrumentation.

The Broken Heartbreakers released their debut EP Everyone’s Waiting for their Darlin’ in 2006, followed by two critically acclaimed albums: their self-titled debut (2007) and Wintersun (2010). Their records have garnered high praise from New Zealand's foremost critics, all revelling in the music’s beauty and sonic promise.

An 11 track gem that ticks all the right boxes when it comes to crafting perfectly formed country and folk-pop songs.**** ½ Otago Daily Times

...a gorgeous album...soft but with substance, sonically rich and beautifully performed. Radio New Zealand

...desert-dry wit, and melodies sturdy enough to hang your hat on NZ Sunday Star Times

“With a sound which draws equally on The Left Banke, the Everly Brothers, Brian Wilson, Beatles and alt.country harmonies, and the Anglofolk tradition this group can hardly fail… intelligent, heartfelt, aching and entrancing. Wonderful album.
