From the editor (White Fungus)
New Zealand is going to be the Guest of Honour at the Taipei Book Fair. A bunch of NZs best and brightest will be coming over, including Eleanor Catton, Witi Ihimaera and and Joy Cowley (Mark and I have been reading Cowleys books to Taiwanese children for years). As part of NZs presence in Taipei, White Fungus has been commissioned to do a big project. Were about to introduce some of our favourite currents of NZ art, music and literature through a bilingual (Chinese and English) publication and an event at the prestigious Huashan 1914 Creative Park. The cover of the publication comes from an artwork by Solomon Mortimer. The publication contains excerpts of a new short story by Vivienne Plumb, plus writing by Wells Tao, Murdoch Stephens, an article by Bruce Russell about the history for DIY music in NZ - encountering figures such as Douglas Lilburn and Chris Knox -and much more. For the event we are flying over three NZ artists, Greg Malcolm, Campbell James Kneale and Jeff Henderson to perform alongside Taiwan artists Fujui Wang, Noise Steve, and Sonic Deadhorse.
This project has the potential to forge lasting connections between the art scenes in New Zealand and Taiwan. It is the culmination of 14 years of foundational work by Mark and I. When I first came to Taiwan at the very beginning of 2000 I didnt know a single person and couldnt speak a word of Chinese. Now we are established here with a strong audience base and media profile. One of the areas we care so deeply about - experimental music and sound art - is held in much higher esteem in Taiwan than it is in New Zealand. So Im excited that some NZ veterans and pioneers of this field are about to receive the respect they are denied at home. New Zealand and Taiwan, as small outsider island countries, are natural allies and artists from these two countries face similar challenges. With this project, White Fungus would like to state that we are stronger and better off together. I hope this project will open a new chapter in terms of relations in the arts between these two black sheep nations. Please help us to spread word of this project to maximise its impact. There will be a New Zealand release event for the new publication at Pyramid Club in Wellington on February 20 curated by Samin Son (EDIT ALL NONA).
